Anhalt-Dessau was a German territory of the Ascanian dynasty (first princely, then duchy), it existed from 1396 to 1863 and was then incorporated into the duchy of Anhalt . During the existence of the principality it was reduced several times through the division of inheritance.
The principality was created in 1396 through the division of the principality of Anhalt-Zerbst into Anhalt-Köthen and Anhalt-Dessau. In 1474 the estate was divided into Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Köthen, and another in 1544, which resulted in Anhalt-Plötzkau , Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Zerbst . After Prince Bernhard von Anhalt-Zerbst's death, the Principality of Anhalt was united under one ruler under Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt-Dessau in 1570. As a result of the inheritance agreement between the sons of Prince Joachim Ernst, the united Principality of Anhalt was divided into Anhalt-Dessau, Anhalt-Bernburg , Anhalt-Köthen and Anhalt-Zerbst . In 1611 the fifth principality of Anhalt-Plötzkau was created (under the sovereignty of Bernburg) through the spin-off of the Plötzkau office from the Bernburg principality.
The principality was elevated to a duchy in 1806. With the extinction of the lines in Köthen in 1847 and in Bernburg in 1863, the duchies merged to form a unified duchy of Anhalt with Dessau as the capital.
The rulers were the princes of Anhalt-Dessau .
