The José María Arguedas district is located in the Andahuaylas province of the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was formed on December 15, 2014 from parts of the Andahuaylas district. The district was named after José María Arguedas (1911-1969), a Peruvian writer.

The district extends over an area of ​​175 km². At the 2017 census, 4186 inhabitants lived in the district. The district administration is located in the 3641  m high town of Huancabamba with 2522 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huancabamba is located about 10 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Andahuaylas . Larger towns in the district are Sacclaya (457 inhabitants) and Checche (415 inhabitants).

Geographical location

The José María Arguedas district is located in the Andean highlands in the central north of the Andahuaylas province.

The José María Arguedas district is bordered by the Andahuaylas district to the west and north, the San Jerónimo district to the northeast, the Lucre district to the southeast and the Colcabamba district to the extreme south (the latter two districts are in the Aymaraes province ).
