Activity as a tattoo artist

Manfred Kohrs, 1976

Manfred Kohrs got his first tattoo on his arm during his school days at the age of twelve and began to tattoo by hand at the age of 13, the so-called " Peikern ". In January 1975 he had Herbert Hoffmann tattoo him and learned the basics working with a tattoo machine. On January 26, 1975 Kohrs met on the occasion of happenings in the Kunstverein Hannover on Timm Ulrichs and Horst Streckenbach. Ulrichs, had exhibited some “old-skool” tattoo motifs on canvas, and Straßenbach tattooed Kohrs in front of the NDR camera. In the following years Kohrs learned to tattoo at Linienbach and after two years working as a travel tattoo artist he opened the first tattoo studio in Hanover in 1977. Kohrs made his machines and accessories himself; He continued to develop the tattoo machine, which was manufactured by Linienbach from 1965 onwards. They differed from the common models that Samuel O'Reilly had patented, for example in the type of drive. So Kohrs relied on rotation instead of magnetic fields. The model `76 Manfred Kohrs also went on sale in Australia. In the late 1970s, Kohrs had a meeting with Fukushi Katsunari through a brokerage from Fahrtbach . In 1983, a plastic surgery clinic in Braunschweig approached Kohrs to tattoo the areola for a nipple reconstruction. In the period that followed, Kohrs carried out such work several times, supplied hospitals with the appropriate equipment and trained medical professionals. At the end of the 1980s Kohrs ended his career as an active tattoo artist.

In the summer of 2016, Kohrs reappeared in the tattoo scene. After a break of 30 years he gave a detailed interview to Stadtkind Hannovermagazin and Tattoo Kulture Magazine , in December 2016 he visited the exhibition Nailed to the Cross (PMA Tattoo Hanover). In spring 2019 he gave the writer Paul-Henri Campbell a detailed interview for the book Tattoo & Religion. The colorful cathedrals of the self. Under the title Manfred Kohrs Making History, Writing History - Between Practice, Reconciliation and Research , Kohrs gives an autobiographical insight into the past 50 years of his work.

"If" a tattoo shows who you are "then you should consider when choosing the motif and the part of the body that you may not want to show everyone who you once were in the future."

In 1977 Kohrs invited a number of tattooists registered in Germany and Switzerland - including Linienbach, Edward Sstak "Tattoo Eddy" († January 23, 1993, Fürth), Herbert Hoffmann , Heinrich Dietz and Theodor Vetter to an information meeting in Hanover . "At that time there were only 14 self-employed tattooists in the whole of Germany." The purpose of this meeting was to found a national association in order to subsequently introduce technical and hygienic standards. At the time, Straßenbach and Kohrs were the only German tattoo artists who used an autoclave to sterilize the devices. Kohrs then got in touch with the US tattoo artist "Philadelphia Eddie" Funk and was initially involved in the National Tattoo Club of the World . Between 1976 and 1984 Kohrs traveled to the USA several times, attended tattoo conventions and published in association magazines and journals. At the first "Convention" of the National Tattoo Club of the World, January 24-25, 1976 in Houston (Texas) and at the convention from March 23-25, 1979 in the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Denver (Colorado), he met u. a. to David Yurkew , Don Ed Hardy , Arnold Rubin and Terry Wrigley , who accepted him as the 25th member of the European Tattoo Artist Association (ETAA).
