Irma Rapuzzi

Irma Rapuzzi (born April 12, 1910 in Cadolive , Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ; † April 3, 2018 in Marseille ) was a French politician . From 1955 to 1989 she was a member of the Conseil de la République and the resulting Senate .

Life and political career

Rapuzzi was the daughter of a miner and entered the teaching profession after completing her studies. She was also involved in trade unions and joined the socialist party SFIO before the start of the Second World War . In 1947 she moved to the city council of Marseille and became third deputy to Mayor Gaston Defferre . In 1955 she was elected to the Conseil de la République. She was re-elected four more times - from 1959 the previous Conseil de la République was reconstituted as Senate - before she did not run again in 1989. In addition to a long-standing membership in the Finance Commission, which with a few interruptions extended to her entire term of office, she was represented in the Commission for Laws from 1977 to 1980. She advocated the expansion of decentralization , while socio-politically she dealt with the concerns of young people and the elderly. With 34 years of membership in the Senate, she was the longest-serving woman there.

At the local level, Rapuzzi moved into the General Council of the Bouches-du-Rhône department in 1967 and rose to become the first deputy mayor of Marseille in 1971. She was a member of the General Council until 1985. On July 14, 1991 she was accepted into the Legion of Honor with the rank of Knight . During her political career she was a close ally of Marseilles Mayor Gaston Defferre and was also responsible for budget planning. Rapuzzi celebrated her 100th birthday in 2010 and was recognized by Senator Jean-Noël Guérini as an important figure in the post-war history of Marseille.
