Geoffroy Velten

Godfried "Geoffroy" Velten (born September 10, 1831 in Brumath , † September 21, 1915 in Paris ) was a French politician. He was a member of the Senate from 1885 to 1912 .

Velten came from Alsace and was a trained beer brewer . He practiced this profession in Marseille . In 1868 he was an election assistant for Léon Gambetta , a year later he supported Alphonse Esquiros . He was also involved in several Republican newspapers. In 1874 he moved into the city council of Marseille, in 1879 into the general council of the Bouches-du-Rhône department . After selling his brewery in 1881, he had a substantial fortune. In 1885 he was elected to the Senate. There he belonged to the moderate left faction, of which he was one of the founders. In 1894 and 1903 he was re-elected. He did not run again in the 1912 elections. Velten, who was an officer in the Legion of Honor , died three years later .
