Isolde Monson-Baumgart (born December 3, 1935 in Munich ; † November 3, 2011 in Kassel ) was a German graphic artist , sculptor and university teacher .

Life

She first studied at the State University of Fine Arts Berlin in Berlin and then in Kassel with Hans Leistikow and Hans Georg Hillmann . She was particularly interested in graphic art. From Kassel she went on suggestions of her college friend Roger Platiel (1934-1978) to Paris to be from 1959 to 1963 in the famous Atelier 17 of Stanley William Hayter to develop their photographic skills. From 1961 she worked as his assistant. After completing her studies, she worked as a freelance artist and commercial artist in Frankfurt am Main and Paris , often accompanied by longer work stays in the USA. From 1960, her work became increasingly known internationally, due to numerous solo and group exhibitions, publications in catalogs and magazines, and inclusion in state collections.

From 1965 to 1966/67 she got a teaching position for printmaking at the American Center (Paris) in Paris, later she also taught at the University of Connecticut , the Merzakademie in Stuttgart and at the University of Kassel .

She was best known for posters for movies. As a student she designed for Neue Filmkunst , later for Atlas Film . She designed for the Munich trade fair and the bicentenary of the French Revolution . From 1973 to 1998 she designed several stamp series for the Deutsche Bundespost. In addition, she produced abstract etchings , collages and, since the early 1990s, sculptures that were designed in color.

Since 1973 she was married to the American graphic artist Jim Monson . In 1976 she accepted the AGI as a member. In 2007/08, the Filmmuseum Düsseldorf and the German Film Museum showed their work as part of the Film Art Graphics exhibition .

Her works are now in the holdings of important institutions in Berlin , Frankfurt am Main , Kassel , Minneapolis , Munich , Oslo , Skopje , Stuttgart , Wiesbaden and private collections such as the BNP Paribas in Paris .
