The Merz Academy has been a state-recognized university for design, art and media in the Berg Kulturpark in Stuttgart-East since 1985 . Its roots lie in the "Free Academy for Recognition and Design" founded in 1918 by the reform pedagogue Albrecht Leo Merz . Under the direction of Markus Merz, the facility received state recognition in 1985. Markus Merz headed the university from 1983 to 2016 as rector. Martin Fritz has been Rector since 2016 .

Education

Bachelor's degree in design, art and media there are the fields of study: cross-media publishing, film and video , new media , and visual communication . The focus of the courses is on the creative and conceptual application of the new media technologies in social, scientific and cultural areas. The course lasts seven semesters and ends with the state-recognized Bachelor of Arts title .

The three-semester master’s program in Research in Design, Art and Media is aimed at graduates of artistic and design courses as well as scholars in the humanities and cultural studies. It offers participants the opportunity to pursue their own artistic research projects in the fields of film and video , new media or visual communication . In interdisciplinary teams, which are jointly led by professors of theory and design, on the basis of intensive research, one's own aesthetic practice is developed and reflected in its social significance. The master’s degree concludes with the state-recognized title of Master of Arts .

The educational institution has extensive technical equipment in the areas of photography , printing, video editing , sound processing as well as a 3D blue screen studio, computer laboratories and a library.

Accreditation

The university, run by Merz Akademie gGmbH as a non-profit organization, was institutionally accredited by the Science Council in 2008 and 2015, followed by course accreditations for Bachelor and Master’s courses. Since 2011, the university has been named Merz Akademie, University of Design, Art and Media, Stuttgart.

Selected publications of the academy are published by Wilhelm Fink Verlag. Some publications have also been published together with the Akademie Schloss Solitude Foundation under the name Merz & Solitude .
