His father, Alfred Pretzsch (1908–1992), was a painter, interior designer, bridge builder, architectural graphic artist and university professor , his mother a carpenter and furniture designer . He spent his childhood in Weimar . After attending the polytechnic high school, he learned the profession of toolmaker parallel to obtaining the general university entrance qualification . 1968–1972 he completed a degree in architecture and urban planning at the Weimar University of Architecture and Construction , from which he graduated with a diploma.

Here he also met his future wife Barbara (Bärbel) Rudolph (1949–2006). Jürgen Pretzsch worked with her as a city planner from 1972 to 1991, including five years in Neubrandenburg , two years in Magdeburg and eleven years in Erfurt. Jürgen Pretzsch worked as a freelance watercolor painter and graphic artist from 1991 until his death in 2014. From 1995 he specialized in capturing exposed buildings and entire cities in the form of isometric representations and, after an encounter with Ernst Haeckel's Art Forms of Nature, also in the form of radiolarians on paper and with explanatory texts, shaped by his interest in science , philosophy and Literature , to be added.
