Johann Vitéz (Veszprém)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Vitéz († 1499 ) was bishop of Sirmium , appointed administrator of Olomouc , bishop of Veszprém and administrator of Vienna .

Life

Johann Vitéz was the nephew of the archbishop of the same name, Johann Vitéz von Gran . He probably studied in Paris and later became Chancellor and legate of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus . On March 31, 1482, he nominated Johann Vitéz Bishop of Sirmium .

In 1487 Vitéz was appointed administrator of the Diocese of Olomouc by the Pope, but could not assert himself there because Johann Filipec was still in office. Probably for this reason the Pope Johann Vitéz transferred to Veszprém on June 3, 1489.

After the death of Matthias Corvinus, the emperor's son Maximilian nominated Johann Vitéz as administrator of the diocese of Vienna on November 3, 1490. Since the nomination without the consent of Maximilian's father Friedrich III. was done, Johann Vitéz took the oath of allegiance to the emperor on February 9, 1492, who then approved the nomination. Although Vitéz retained the diocese of Veszprém, the papal translation to Vienna took place on February 8, 1493.

The learned society "Sodalitas literaria Danubia" founded by Konrad Celtis elected Johann Vitéz as its chairman.
