Kreidler is a German band from Düsseldorf that was founded in 1994. It combines electronic and acoustic instruments and is characterized by critics as techno , pop , avant-garde , post-rock , ambient or electronica , depending on the publication .

Kreidler was the lettering on a T-shirt that Andreas Reihse wore on the day when the band Deux Baleines Blanches was looking for a new name. It was subsequently interpreted as a kind of anagram of Klein, Reihse, Schneider, Weinrich .

history

The early days

In 1993, Andreas Reihse and Stefan Schneider from the Düsseldorf band Deux Baleines Blanches (Klein, Reihse, Schneider) initiated the project Punt. (Dot) together with Cor Gout from The Hague band Trespassers W. , a German-Dutch collaboration against the flaring up right-wing populism and right-wing radicalism in both countries. They organized concerts, held readings and published a single and a newspaper that dealt with forms and possibilities of artistic (musical) intervention in politics (contributions from, among others: Günther Jacob & Wohlfahrtsausschuss Hamburg , Attila the Stockbroker , Mayo Thompson , Erinna König , Dr. Ralf Bohn, Didi de Paris, Michel Sauer , Achim Greser , FW Bernstein , BüroBert, Anarchist Academy , Henk Oosterling, Andrea Zeitler).

In spring 1994 they organized a spoken word evening in Düsseldorf with Celestine Raalte, Eddie Kagie, Attila the Stockbroker, Harald Sack Ziegler, Willem Jacobs and Cor Gout. There she asked the lyricist Stan Lafleur whether the band would do a gig with him. At the same time they met Detlef Weinrich , who played records as a DJ Sport during the tour of the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

The first appearance of Kreidler feat. DJ Sport (with Stan Lafleur) took place on March 29, 1994 in a bar in Düsseldorf's old town.

1994-1996

Kreidler's first year was marked by dealing with spoken word poetry. The band played instrumental music from Dub was influenced and electronica, but also by the "Düsseldorf schools" of the seventies ( Kraftwerk , Neu! , La Dusseldorf ) and early eighties ( New Wave , German New Wave , Ratinger Hof ). In the summer of 1994, the first album Riva was released on the French label A Contresens . While half of Riva consisted of pieces with (spoken) texts, the follow-up, recorded in Matthias Arfmann's Hamburg studio in spring 1995, was purely instrumental. The seven-track untitled mini-album was released by the Cologne label Finlayson .

With this record, Kreidler were assigned by the press on the one hand to the Chicago post-rock school around Tortoise , and on the other hand to the conjured up Krautrock revival . This was based on the one hand on their combination of analog and digital instruments and sounds - which was considered remarkable at the time - and on the other hand on the fact that the band built their pieces live on variable patterns and varied them. The solo projects of individual members were clearly rooted in these worlds: Reihse and at times also Klein worked with the former Kraftwerk / NEU! - / La Düsseldorf mastermind Klaus Dinger in the formation la! NEU? while Schneider explored the possibilities of post rock with To Rococo Rot . Kreidler's next release, the single Kookaï , was a surprisingly melodious song that reminded Spex of "night drives through Düsseldorf's city center and the effect of deserted shopping arcades".

1996

In autumn 1996 Kreidler released the album Weekend on the label KiffSM . With this record you were voted Newcomer of the Year by the readers of Spex in the review of the year 1996 . "The homogeneity of the means, the flexibility of the structures as well as the development of the album itself make 'Weekend' an independent and pleasant weekend". Die Zeit wrote: “Avant-garde that is fun right away”. The album also received good reviews internationally. And other musicians in particular showed their appreciation for the band, such as David Bowie , Arto Lindsay , Momus , Ken Ishi , Pavement , Stereolab and Nicolette .

1997

In 1997, the success of Weekend led the band to tour France and make their first appearances in London. They then released the maxi-single Fechterin , which was named Single of the Week by Melody Maker : “The three songs are the most precise exercises in exponential electronics I've heard since Kraftwerk's Hall of mirrors, and just as danceable”. In the same month the EP Resport appeared on Stewardess with remixes by Pyrolator , Erik (MMM), L @ n and Robert Lippok.

1998-1999

Kreidler produced the follow-up to Weekend in the Mouse on Mars studio . In May 1998 the album Appearance and The Park was released . One of the aesthetic ideas for the album was to make it clear that the band members had grown up with (Anglo-American) New Wave and not with the German rock music of the 70s. The cover artwork already looks cold, model-like, synthetic, while The Park in the title ties in with the park photography on the cover of the previous album. In the pieces you can clearly hear the Roland Juno synthesizer as the lead instrument, the bass lines are reminiscent of the music of the Factory Records label , sound effects are reminiscent of postpunk and the sequencer is reminiscent of the synth pop of the 80s. The first single Au-Pair combined these elements in an epic pop anthem. The video for the piece was awarded second place at the video awards at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival in 1999.

In the summer of 1998 the EP Coldness was released , Kreidler's first song with vocals since 1994. Remixes came from Shantel and from Daniel Miller , the founder of Mute Records and producer of Depeche Mode , whom the band met in 1997 when they first performed in London. Now he mixed them a piece of synth pop. The American Forced Exposure wrote: "Kreidler's most outlandlishly accessible moment, in a synth-electro style that is totally captivating." Later that year the band went on their first festival tour. They played in Brighton (The Fringe) and Roskilde, among others . At the end of 1998, Kreidler and Stefan Schneider separated, who made his previous side project To Rococo Rot the main thing. On bass the band found reinforcement in Alex Paulick, the songwriter from Coloma . In spring 1999 they toured with this line-up through Great Britain and together with Tarwater through France and Switzerland. In addition, Kreidler parted ways with the record company Play it again Sam this year in a legal dispute after A&R and Kiffsm label manager Jutta Bächner had previously resigned.

2000-2001

In 1999 the band moved into an empty post office building behind the Düsseldorf train station, as part of the “Innenstadt Mainstream eV” association - alongside the EGO club for electronic music projects, the hobbypopMUSEUM artist collective, the musicians L @ N, Antonelli Electr. , The Bad Examples or Background Records. At the beginning of 2000 they began expanding their studio there and then recording a new album. Kreidler appeared on Jutta Bächner's newly founded label Wonder . The music sounded cleaner, more digital, but with a warmth that was clearly different from the model-like coldness of the previous album. The songwriting was also clearer, the pieces on Kreidler had clear pop-song-like structures. Three songs were with voice / vocals, one with the British musician Momus and another with the Argentine Leo Garcia.

In February 2001 Kreidler played for the first time in New York. In addition to an appearance in the Knitting Factory , the real reason was an invitation from Düsseldorf photographer Andreas Gursky : he wanted the band to open his retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art with a concert . November 2001 an EP was released with the Chicks on Speed . In addition to three original compositions, it also included a cover version of the Nick Cave - Kylie Minogue duet Where the Wild Roses Grow . Here, however, with reversed roles. The production earned, among other things, 5 stars in De: Bug, Spektakel in the intro, hymns of praise in The Face, Wire, NME and found itself repeatedly in the John Peel playlists. Detlef Weinrich shot three video clips for the album.

2002-2004

At the beginning of February 2002, Kreidler gave the first glimpses of the new Kreidler album Eve Future at the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen , which varied themes from the band's history in a baroque style. Detlef Weinrich created six short films for this, which are presented in an installation with live music. The video for La Casa was in the final round of the Muvi-Clip Awards at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival in April. In the summer of 2003, Kreidler was invited by the Goethe-Institut to a series of performances in Southeast Asia - eight concerts and one seminar in Singapore , Kuala Lumpur , Jakarta , Manila , Hanoi and Bangkok . What had an impact on the album Eve Future Recall , which was released the following year : “With almost mathematical meticulousness, Kreidler recorded percussive pop gems that tie in with Japanese folklore, but also with metallophone music from Bali. 2005-2008

In the following years it became quiet about Kreidler. With the exception of the soundtrack composed by Klein and Reihse for Alexandra Sells film Durchgangsland from 2005 and occasional concerts, the individual members appeared more with solo projects. In 2008, however, Klein, Reihse and Weinrich came together for a new album production.

2009–2012

In October 2009 the Kreidler album Mosaik 2014 was released , on March 4, 2011 Tank with a total of six titles on Bureau B , and in October 2012 the album Den .

2015

In spring 2015, Kreidler accompanied the reading tour of The Day When My Wife Found A Husband by Sibylle Berg .

Side projects

Thomas Klein calls himself “Clyne”, “Solyst” and Fauna with his partner Petra Bosch . Andreas Reihse and Detlef Weinrich produced techno as Binford , as April & Seasons they remixed Kante , with Alex Paulick and Rob Taylor they called themselves DarkPark . Detlef Weinrich's DJ alias is Sport , he releases solo as Tolouse Low Trax, a slow, rhythmic type of club music that relates to old-school electro. He is also responsible for the artistic / musical program of the Düsseldorf bar Salon des Amateurs . Andreas Reihse's pseudonym is April when it comes to electronic / danceable music, he publishes under his own name, as Herkules Duo Zweigang Automatik with Thomas Brinkmann and as BadFrench with Kiki Moorse . Guest musician

Occasionally Kreidler work with guest musicians. Today's Kante bassist Florian Dürrmann alias Flo Metzger plays guitar on two tracks on the album Weekend ; British singer-songwriter Momus and Argentine pop star Leo Garcia sing on Kreidler , Petra Bosch on Eve Future , and Valerie Sajdik speaks a text in Von Valerie on Eve Future Recall .
