Kuummiit [ kuːmːiːt ] ( Kitaamiusut Kuummiit ; according to the old spelling Kûngmît or Kungmiut ) is a Greenland settlement in the district Ammassalik in the Sermersooq .

location

Kuummiit is on the south coast of mainland Greenland. The fjord-like Sortukattak , which is divided by the island of Kuummiit Immikkeertertuaat , runs in front of the place . The Ammassaliip Kangertiva runs to the east . The nearest town is Sermiligaaq , 29 km to the east .

history

Kuummiit was founded in 1915 as a mission site on the site of a residential area with the East Greenlandic name Tsiarngarmiit (West Greenlandic Siorarmiut ). According to earlier accounts of the residents, the place, like Kulusuk, was formerly inhabited by the Grænlendingar , which cannot be supported by archaeological studies. The first catechist was the Tunumeer Kârale Andreassen . A Danish-Greenland mission building with a church, classroom and catechist apartment was built.

The fishery for halibut and redfish began in Kuummiit in 1916 under the direction of the Danish zoologist Adolf Severin Jensen . In 1920 there were 47 people living in the village who lived in two houses. In 1929 a school was built. In 1930 Kuummiit had 70 inhabitants, in 1940 there were 164 and in 1950 there were 242. Between 1940 and 1956, 17 to 33 inhabitants lived in the Simiilaq (Simiutaq) residential area 700 m to the west , which was later incorporated by Kuummiit. In 1951 the KGH built an office in Kuummiit, in 1954 a shop and from 1957 to 1958 several warehouse buildings. In 1956 the place received a radio link. In 1957 a church was built and in 1958 an infirmary. In 1960 Kuummiit received the status of Udsted when 326 people were already living in the village. In the 1960s, the residents lived mainly from seal hunting and catching cod. In 1962 a fishing facility and a quay as well as a new school were built, which had to be expanded in 1972. In 1967 she had already had 165 students. When the residents of Skjoldungen Island were relocated in 1965 , Kuummiit suddenly grew by 100 inhabitants, so that in 1970 Kuummiit already had 455 inhabitants.

economy

The only fish factory in East Greenland is in Kuummiit. The area used to be rich in cod , but now only small amounts of black halibut are processed there. Many work for Pilersuisoq or, for example, at school. Part of the income in Kuummiit comes from tourism.

Infrastructure and supply

Kuummiit can be reached by boat from May to November. The Kuummiit Heliport also allows traffic with the surrounding area for the rest of the year. In the immediate vicinity there is traffic with dog sleds and snowmobiles .

The electricity and water supply is guaranteed by Nukissiorfiit . Garbage is dumped, incinerated or shipped to Tasiilaq , while sewage is discharged into the sea.

Development

The Kuummiini Alivarpi teaches students up to 7th grade. Then the students have to go to another school. There is also a church, a kindergarten and a home for the elderly in the village. The service building offers sanitary facilities and overnight accommodation. There is also an office building, an infirmary and a meeting building. There is also the Pilersuisoq branch and a kiosk. In the east of the village there is a soccer field next to the cemetery.
