The Autobianchi Y10 is a small car marketed worldwide as Lancia and in Italy as Autobianchi . Today he is considered to be the pioneer of the small lifestyle car.

Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1985, the futuristic-looking Y10 initially complemented the Lancia range, but in the medium term was intended to replace the Autobianchi A112 , which was built in a standardized version for almost two years and rounded off the range downwards, which was due to the relatively high price of the Y10 also made sense. In most export markets, Lancia marketed the newcomer under its own brand, while for the domestic market the model was sold under the Autobianchi signet and logo via the joint Lancia-Autobianchi dealer network. Y10 is the Lancia project code, which was used as the model name after internal use.

The floor pan is based on that of the face-lifted Fiat Panda with the so-called Omega rear axle. The fuel-efficient, very quiet FIRE engine from Fiat-Lancia also made its debut in the Y10 . The design of the Y10 was created by Lancia itself in the in-house Centro Stile, and during the production period from 1985 to 1995 a total of three series of the model appeared. Lancia first manufactured the Y10 in Desio (near Autobianchi), and from 1992 onwards in the Arese plant of the then affiliated company ALFA LANCIA Industriale spa

The first series differs essentially in terms of technology and the orange front indicators from the second series, which appeared in mid-1989 and had white indicators.

The third series, introduced in autumn 1992, was visually matched by the Lancia designers to the other Lancia models (although the radiator grille differs from the typical Lancia version due to the lack of a central pillar and the centrally positioned logo), while the engineers created a more profound technical model Subject to optimization.

A unique selling point of the car is the tailgate, which is usually painted matt black, which is intended to emphasize the aerodynamically favorable K-tail . Originally, the tailgate should be made of unpainted plastic (like the front and rear bumpers), which would have led to a weight reduction and a reduction in costs. Tests with plastic tailgates did not produce the desired results, so that the component for series production was made of sheet steel. In order to maintain the appearance of the design, the tailgate has been painted matt black. Only a few special models have a trunk lid painted in the same color as the car or a slightly darker shade. In the course of the third series there was also a variant with a tailgate in the same design as the seat covers.

Production (and with it the Autobianchi brand in Italy) ran out in the late summer of 1995 - Lancia introduced the Lancia Y as a successor.
