Leeds is a town in Androscoggin County in the state of Maine in the United States . Leeds is on the west bank of Androscoggin Lake. In 2010 there were 2326 inhabitants in 1018 households on an area of ​​112.4 km².

Geographical location

Leeds is in northeast Androscoggin County and borders Kennebec County . In the west the area of ​​the town is bounded by the Androscoggin River , in the east of the town is the Androscoggin Lake . Several smaller streams flow northwards into the Androscoggin River. The Dead River is one of them. The surface of the town is rather flat, the highest point being the 200 m high Monument Hill on the west bank of Androscoggin Lake .

history

The area was first named Littleborough after a Massachusetts family who were among the largest landowners. The town was founded in 1801. Part of the town of Livermore above the Dead River was added to the town in 1802 and a narrow strip of what originally belonged to Monmouth followed in 1809. The area at Beech Hill was given to Wayne in 1810 and in 1852 the southeastern part of Leeds was given to Wales. The town has around 9,307 hectares (23,000 ac ) of land.

The first settlers in Leeds were Thomas and Roger Stinchfield, who moved with their families to the Dead River in June 1780. The two brothers knew the area from the hunts they carried out there. Other early settlers were the Fish, Millett, and Bishop families. Revolutionary Army soldiers also followed as settlers. The first service in the town was held in 1794 at the request of Thomas Francis, a local resident. A Baptist Church was founded in 1800 and Thomas Francis was an ordained pastor. The Quakers founded a community in 1807, but it no longer exists. The first Baptist church was founded in 1836, the first Methodist in 1851.

The town had a gravel mill in the center, a sawmill and flour mill in West Leeds, and a gravel mill at Curtis Corner.

US Highway 202 runs through the southernmost tip of the town . The Maine State Route 202 runs north to south Wales in the south to Live More Falls in the north.
