The pole vault men at the 1971 European Athletics Championships was on 11 and 13 August 1971 at the Olympic Stadium of Helsinki held.

European champion was the two-time title winner of 1966 / 1969 and Olympic bronze medalist from 1968 Wolfgang Nordwig from the GDR. As at the European Championships in 1969, the Swede Kjell Isaksson took second place. Bronze went to the Italian Renato Dionisi .

Record improvement

European champion Wolfgang Nordwig improved his own championship record in the final on August 13th by five centimeters to 5.35 meters. Germany Democratic Republic 1949GDR 

qualification

Twenty participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 5.00 m. Twelve athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue) and entered the final on the day after next.
