The shot put men at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics was on August 29, 1987 at the Olympic Stadium of the Italian capital Rome held.
World champion was the Swiss Werner Günthör . He won ahead of the 1984 Italian Olympic champion and world record holder Alessandro Andrei . Bronze went to the American John Brenner .

qualification

Nineteen participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 20.40 m. Six athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the six next-placed athletes to twelve shot putters (highlighted in light green). So finally 19.69 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
