history
Leipa was first mentioned as a Wendish settlement in documents in 1376 under the name Lipe , which is derived from the Sorbian word lipa for "linden tree". The first evidence of settlement comes from the year 1271, which possibly formed the basis for the later establishment of the Leipa district.
As part of the National Socialist Germanization of Sorbian place names, the district administrator of the Schweinitz district had applied in 1937, with the consent of the municipality, to rename Leipa to "Lindeck" and thus to erase the Sorbian name. Unlike in other regions , however, the renaming failed here due to the rejection of the responsible district president.
The population of Leipzig rose to 169 for a short time after the Second World War due to the relatively large number of resettlers. With around 100 inhabitants today, Leipa is one of the smaller districts of Jessen.
