Leopolis Jazz Fest

The Leopolis Jazz Fest (until 2017 Alfa Jazz Fest ( Альфа Джаз Фест )) is an international jazz festival that has been held annually in Lviv ( Ukraine ) since 2011 . In " The Guardian " the Alfa Jazz Fest 2016 is in the list of the best European festivals.

Festival structure

The festival traditionally takes place on three stages:

  • The main stage of the "Eddie Rosner" festival is in B. Khmelnytskyi Park
  • The stage in the Market Square, the central square in Lviv
  • The stage in Lviv's old town in the courtyard of the Potocki Palace

In addition to the concerts, jam sessions are held at the festival , sometimes also master classes , photo exhibitions and screenings of jazz films.

history

The initiator of the festival was Mikhail Fridman , who was born in Lviv. The title sponsor of the festival until 2016 was Alfa-Bank Ukraine, which he owns. In 2017, after this donor was no longer available, the decision was made to rename the festival to Leopolis Jazz Fest (Leopolis is an ancient Latinized name from Lemberg / Lwiw).

From 2012 the winners of the international music award "Alfa Jazz Fest Awards" were presented at the gala concert of the festival in Lviv; the award was renamed in 2018. The award was given to musicians for outstanding contributions to the development of jazz music and is intended to honor the musicians and popularize jazz. The winner was determined by a jury that includes music critics, politicians, journalists and entrepreneurs from all over the world.

2011

The first Alfa Jazz Festival was held from June 3rd to 5th, 2011. The headliners included:

The second Alfa Jazz Fest took place from June 1st to 3rd, 2012. It counted up to 30,000 international visitors. The headliners included:

In 2012, the international music award "Alfa Jazz Fest Awards - Eddie Rosner" was presented for the first time as part of the festival. The first winner was the British jazz guitarist John McLaughlin .

2013

From June 13th to 16th, 2013 the international festival was held for the third time. The headliners included:

The presentation of the international music prize "Alfa Jazz Fest Awards" took place on June 15, 2013 at the gala concert; The winner was the American double bass player Charlie Haden .

2014

The fourth Alfa Jazz took place in Lviv between June 12 and 15, 2014. Headliners included: Larry Carlton , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Eliane Elias , Miles Electric Band, Lucky Peterson , Charles Lloyd .

Charles Lloyd received the Alfa Jazz Fest Awards 2014 on June 14, 2014.

2015

The fifth Alfa Jazz Festival was held from June 25-29, 2015. Musicians from Germany, Austria , the USA, Japan , Sweden , Cuba , France , Poland and the Ukraine performed in front of thousands of people.

Top acts were Herbie Hancock , George Benson , Wayne Shorter , Mike Stern , Paquito D'Rivera and Hiromi from Japan.

The winner of the international music award “Alfa Jazz Fest Awards” in 2015 was Herbie Hancock.

2016

The Alfa Jazz Festival 2016 took place from June 24th to 27th. The headliners included:

The winner of the “Alfa Jazz Fest Awards” 2016 was Pat Metheny.

2017

The festival took place for the seventh time in Lviv from June 23 to 27, 2017. Participants included: Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band , Buika , Yellowjackets , China Moses , Gregory Porter , Chucho Valdés , the Trio Mare Nostrum ( Paolo Fresu , Richard Galliano , Jan Lundgren ), Herbie Hancock , Chick Corea Elektric Band, Avishai Cohen together with the Academic Symphony Orchestra "INSO-Lviv" and Tamara Lukasheva

The winner of the “Alfa Jazz Fest Award” 2017 was Chucho Valdés.

2018

From June 27 to July 1, 2018, the eighth International Jazz Festival took place under the new name Leopolis Jazz Fest . 170 musicians from 16 countries performed on three city stages over the course of 5 days.

The headliners were: Charles Lloyd & the Marvels, Jamie Cullum , Robert Glaspers R + R = NOW (Reflect + Respond = Now) , Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin , Ahmad Jamal , Jacob Collier , Mario Biondi , Stefano Bollani - Napoli Trip and Marcus Miller and the Lars Danielsson Group Liberetto III & INSO-Lviv.

The winner of the International Music Prize, now known as the Leopolis Jazz Music Award , was Ahmad Jamal in 2018.

2019

The ninth edition of the festival took place from June 26th to 30th, 2019.

Among the headliners of the Leopolis Jazz Fest 2019 were: Adrien Brandeis , Snarky Puppy , Étienne M'Bappé & the Prophets, Kenny Barron with his quintet, Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Chick Corea & My Spanish Heart Band , Peter Cincotti , Lisa Stansfield , Diana Krall (with Joe Lovano , Marc Ribot , Robert Hurst and Karriem Riggins ) and Bobby McFerrin Gimme5 (circlesongs).

The recipient of the Leopolis Jazz Music Awards international music award in 2019 was Kenny Barron.

2020

The 10th event of the festival was scheduled for June 25-29 , 2020, but has been postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine . The new date for the Leopolis Jazz Fest is planned for June 24th to 28th, 2021 (Thursday to Monday).
