List of newspapers in Denmark
The list of newspapers in Denmark includes daily and weekly newspapers that appear in Denmark (excluding the Faroe Islands and Greenland ).
History of the Danish newspaper market
Apart from the first leaflets from 1482, the country's newspaper history began with the appearance of predominantly German-language weekly newspapers from 1634. The monthly Den Danske Mercurius , published from 1666 to 1777, is considered an early example of a Danish-language newspaper. Censorship and compulsory licensing were the order of the day until the first draft constitution of the Danish Basic Law in 1848 and had an impact on the content of the publications. In 1749 the first edition of Kiøbenhavnske Danske Post-Tidender , the forerunner of Berlingske and the weekly Weekendavisen, appeared . From the very beginning, Denmark's first daily newspaper took a leading position in the newspaper market, which continues to the present day. The first local newspaper was the Aalborg Stiftstidende from 1769. From the second half of the 19th century, the newspaper market flourished in the course of industrialization , which can be explained, among other things, with new printing techniques and lower paper costs. The new foundations were organs of Danish parties that appeared all over the country and covered party political issues, opinions and cultural debates. In 1905, a press reform was introduced, which changed the format and the content of the daily newspapers. From then on, topics from everyday life and the economy were also reported; Reports and reader service were introduced based on the US model. The two morning papers and tabloids, Ekstra Bladet (from 1904), a special edition of Politiken , and BT (from 1916), a publication by Berlingske Media, benefited from the reform that was implemented up to the First World War . In Jutland , the Jyllands-Posten was published from 1871 , which dominated the market on the peninsula as the initial regional newspaper and also established itself in the rest of the country in the second half of the 20th century.
Newspaper death
After the news monopoly was given up, newspapers had to compete with radio from 1926 onwards . The German occupation in World War II caused the circulation to double again, including illegal publications such as the Dagbladet Information ; but that could not prevent the newspaper deaths that began in the 1930s. TV news programs such as TV Avisen from 1965, the admission of private channels from 1988, the Internet and, last but not least, free newspapers (from 2001) such as MetroXpress , 24timer and Urban did the rest, so that of 123 editorially independent daily newspapers from 1945 half a century later (1994) only 33 remained. For July 2011, a historic decline in the circulation figures of all paid and subscription newspapers was recorded when the number of copies sold, including those of the three largest ( Jyllands-Posten , Berlingske and Politiken ), fell below the hundred thousand mark for the first time.
