Herlev Kommune is a Danish municipality in the Hovedstaden region .
The Copenhagen suburb of Herlev is located between Gladsaxe Commune in the east and Ballerup Commune in the west. With an area of 12.10 km², Herlev municipality is the third smallest municipality in Denmark with 28,953 inhabitants - after Vallensbæk municipality with 9.50 km². The Herlev administrative center itself is part of the capital region Hovedstadsområdet , but not the rural parts of the municipality. However, only 24 of the 28,953 residents of the municipality live outside the closed settlement area (as of January 1, 2020).
The municipality was split off from Gladsaxe in 1909 and belonged to Harde Sokkelund Herred in what was then Københavns Amt , from 1970 in the reduced Københavns Amt , and is today part of the Hovedstaden region - unchanged by the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 .
