List of countries by child mortality rate
The following list sorts countries according to their child mortality rate . The child mortality rate is the number of children per 1,000 births who do not survive the first five years of life. Despite a decline in mortality for decades, seven million children under the age of five died worldwide in 2007, almost 20,000 per day. In 1990 it was over twelve million
Child mortality is particularly common in poor countries. Reasons for a high child mortality rate can be:
- Inadequate medical care and inadequate health systems
- Bad hygienic conditions
- Lack of education for women and girls
- Malnutrition caused by poverty
- The resulting diseases such as diarrhea , malaria or AIDS
- Armed conflict and political instability
The level of child mortality is a direct indicator of a country's development and the quality of its health care.
list
The list sorts countries according to the proportion of live births who die within the first five years of their life. The UN data relate to the period between 2010 and 2015 and those of the World Bank to the year 2016. The sources are the data from the “World Population Prospects” of the United Nations from 2015 and the World Bank . Due to different time periods and sources, the information can vary slightly. The states with the lowest death rate are at the top. Luxembourg was the country with the lowest child mortality rate from 2010 to 2015.
