- Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger), born in 1927 in Marktl , spent his childhood in Traunstein, lived in hooves , community Surberg , visited the Archbishop's seminary in Traunstein study and also celebrated his first Mass in the Church of St. Oswald. Benedikt himself referred to Traunstein as his "hometown", which is why the city is also part of the " Benediktweg " cycle pilgrimage route . The Pope has been an honorary citizen of Traunstein since September 2005.
