Siku Quanshu
The Siku Quanshu ( The Complete Library of the Four Treasures , 四庫 全書 , Sìkù Quánshū ), the largest book collection in Chinese history , will be completed after around nine years . The editorial staff consisted of 361 scientists, with Ji Yun and Lu Xixiong as editors-in-chief. Over 10,000 manuscripts from the imperial collection and other libraries were collected and recognized. About 3,000 documents were destroyed because they were classified as hostile to Manchu. Ultimately, 3461 books were selected for inclusion in the Siku Quanshu . They are bound in 36,381 volumes with more than 79,000 chapters. About 800 million Chinese characters can be found on the approximately 2.3 million pages . Four copies for the emperor are kept in specially built libraries in the Forbidden City , the Old Summer Palace , Shenyang and the Wenjin Chamber in Chengde . Three other copies for the public will be deposited in Siku quanshu libraries in Hangzhou , Zhenjiang and Yangzhou . All seven libraries also receive a copy of the imperial encyclopedia Gujin tushu jicheng from 1725 .

- De Sade writes the essay Dialogue between a Priest and a Dying Man in prison . The text was not published until 1926 .

- January 13th : Friedrich Schiller's drama Die Räuber is premiered in the Nationaltheater Mannheim . The public interest is great, as the print edition, which appeared a year earlier, caused quite a stir because of its open criticism of the feudal system. Theater director and director Wolfgang Heribert von Dalberg wants to defuse the plot by moving it 300 years into the past. Leading actor August Wilhelm Iffland appears in the role of Franz Moor with contemporary clothing. The performance causes a scandal.
