Louis Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Lewin von Rothmaler (born September 6, 1814 in Teistungen , † May 20, 1884 in Erfurt ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Louis came from the noble family von Rothmaler. His father was the Saxon Rittmeister a. D. Karl Heinrich Wilhelm von Rothmaler († July 27, 1852 in Teistungen) and his wife Antonie Amalie, born von Westernhagen (* December 21, 1895; † June 3, 1878 in Erfurt ).

Military career

Rothmaler attended grammar school in Nordhausen and joined the school department of the teaching infantry battalion of the Prussian army in mid-November 1830 . From October 1, 1836 he was a private in the 26th Infantry Regiment , was promoted to Second Lieutenant there on September 24, 1835 and as such was used as an adjutant of the 1st Battalion from May 1839 and as a regimental adjutant from February 3, 1845. On December 14, 1848, he was transferred to the 8th Infantry Brigade as adjutant. As such, Rothmaler was involved in the suppression of the Baden Revolution in 1849 and was used in the battles near Ladenburg , Rauental and the enclosure of Rastatt . In the same year in May 1849 he became adjutant of the 1st Division of the II Army Corps of the Rhine Army. Shortly thereafter, Rothmaler was promoted to prime lieutenant and transferred to the 34th Infantry Regiment . In the same year Rothmaler was employed as an adjutant of the combined infantry brigade in Frankfurt am Main and a year later in the same function in the combined infantry brigade of General von Tietzen in the army corps in the Electorate of Hesse . On July 9, 1853 he was promoted to captain and as such Rothmaler was company commander in the 6th Infantry Regiment from March 6, 1856 to November 5, 1858 . Subsequently, with the promotion to major, he was appointed commander of the 2nd battalion of the 10th Landwehr Regiemts in Oels . After participating in the German War , he was initially commissioned with the leadership in 1866 and shortly afterwards was given command of Fusilier Regiment No. 35 . In 1866 he was promoted to colonel, took part in the battle of Königgrätz , was commander of the 11th Infantry Brigade in 1870 and was promoted to major general in the same month . He took part in the Franco-Prussian War , fought near Vionville , Gravelotte , the enclosure of Metz and was wounded by a shot in the right upper arm near Azay. In 1874 he was entrusted with the command of the 7th Division and in the following year Lieutenant General and Commander of the 7th and then of the 8th Division .
