Luciana Maria Arrighi AM (* 1940 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) is an Italian film architect , costume and production designer who has not only won an Oscar for best production design but also several other film awards .

Life

Luciana Arrighi, an older half-sister of the French actress Nike Arrighi , began her career as an art director, costume and production designer in the film industry in 1965 for the television documentary series Monitor and has worked on the staging of forty films to this day.

In 1970 she received her first nomination for a British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Film Award) for best art direction in Loving Women (1969) from Ken Russell with Alan Bates , Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson .

In 1979 she won an AFI Award for Best Production Design in My brilliant career (My Brilliant Career, 1979) by Gillian Armstrong with Judy Davis , Sam Neill and Wendy Hughes in the lead roles .

In 1982 she and Terry Ryan were nominated for an AFI Award for best costume design in the comedy musical Starstruck (1982) by Gillian Armstrong with Jo Kennedy , Ross O'Donovan and Margo Lee .

Together with Ian Whittaker , she won the Academy Award for Best Production Design in Howards End (1992) by James Ivory with Emma Thompson , Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter at the 1993 Academy Awards . In addition, she received a further nomination for the BAFTA Film Award for best production design for this film in 1993. She also won the Silver Ribbon ( Nastro d'Argento des from the Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani (SNGCI)) for the best production design for this film .

At the following Academy Awards in 1994 , she was nominated with Whittaker for the Oscar in this category for the film What Was Left of the Days Left (1993), also directed by James Ivory , in which Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins again played the leading roles alongside James Fox .

For Sense and Sensibility (1995) by Ang Lee with Emma Thompson , Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant , she was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design in 1996. In 1997 she won the AFI Award for Best Production Design in Oscar and Lucinda (1997) by Gillian Armstrong with Ralph Fiennes , Cate Blanchett and Ciarán Hinds .

She received another Oscar nomination with Whitaker in 2000 , for Anna and the King (1999) by Andy Tennant with Jodie Foster , Chow Yun-Fat and Bai Ling . For this film she was nominated for the Excellence in Production Design Award of the Art Directors Guild with Tom Nursey, John Ralph, Paul Ghirardini and Marc Fisichella . She also received a nomination for the SNGCI Nastro d'Argento for best production design for this film and, together with Lek Chaiyan Chunsuttiwat, John Ralph and Paul Ghirardani, for the Golden Satellite Award for best production design.

In 2003 she won a BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design in the television film Churchill - The Gathering Storm (2002) by Richard Loncraine , starring Albert Finney , Vanessa Redgrave and Jim Broadbent . She also received an Emmy nomination in 2003 with Christina Onori and Alessandra Querzola for the HBO- produced television film Mein Haus in Umbrien (2003) by Richard Loncraine with Maggie Smith , Ronnie Barker and Chris Cooper .

For the television film Blood, Sweat and Tears (2009) by Thaddeus O'Sullivan with Brendan Gleeson , James D'Arcy and Iain Glen , also produced by HBO , she was nominated for another Emmy in 2009 with Paul Ghirardani and Ian Whittaker.

She is currently working with director Roland Joffé and the actors Josh Hartnett , Neve Campbell and Claire van der Boom on the stage set for the romantic action - adventure film Singularity , which is due to be released in 2013.
