Men and Women is a French episode film directed by Fred Cavayé , Alexandre Courtès , Michel Hazanavicius , Éric Lartigau , Emmanuelle Bercot , Jean Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche from 2012. It consists of nine short films that deal with the relationship between men and women and especially turning the infidelity.

action

Le prologue [the prologue]

Fred is single and Greg is married. Neither of them can live monogamous and usually spend the nights together in a bar and at the end with one-night stands in the hotel. Fred covers Greg over and over again, even if his wife Stéphanie has not believed either of them for a long time. After another night with other women, both men go over possible excuses for Stéphanie, which Greg has used several times. Still, being loyal is out of the question for him.

Bernard

Bernard had an accident while having sex and is now in the hospital with his lover, neither of them being able to finish their sex act. The doctor again notified Bernard's wife, who has now caught her husband "in the act".

La bonne conscience [the good conscience]

At a conference, the married Laurent tries in vain to spend the night with a woman. He is particularly astonished that the wheelchair user Antoine can apparently have anyone. In his desperation, Laurent finally tries to seduce the inconspicuous and chubby colleague Christine, who lets him down. Because at the end he even sends her a piece of paper with the words “I love you”, which he hopes to get her around with, the next day he becomes a mockery of his colleagues.

Lolita

The married orthodontist Éric has started an affair with his former patient Ines, a 19-year-old student. Without being asked, she introduces him to her friends, who make fun of the much older Eric. He wants to spend the day with Ines in a hotel, but she doesn't care about an evening in the hotel room. She goes to a disco, where she ignores Eric. He feels left behind, wants to talk to her and finally gets into a fight. He returns to his wife the next morning, demolishes the windshield of his car just outside the house and finally claims that the traces of the fight on his face come from a car accident.

Thibault

Thibault says goodbye to his lover in his apartment when his wife rings the doorbell. He tidies up the apartment in no time, removes all traces of his lover and throws her things out the window. What remains is the family dog, who promptly holds the used condom in its mouth. When his wife appears in the apartment, Thibault throws the dog out of the window.

Simon

During a SM game in his garage, Simon whips his playmate, who is hanging on a rope, so violently that she passes out. Meanwhile, Simon's wife returns home with her son and wants to park the car in the garage where Simon is with the woman who has passed out. The son asks if he can also swing on the woman once.

La question

Olivier and Lisa are invited to their friends Nicolas and Julie, and Nicolas has no problem telling them about his numerous affairs. Back at her house, Lisa asks Olivier who he cheated on her with. When she doesn’t let up, Olivier confesses to her being on the side and Lisa gets angry. Olivier does everything to achieve a reconciliation, but then learns that Lisa once cheated on him too. He makes a scene for her; in the end they both reconcile.

Les infidèles anonymes [The Anonymous Cheaters]

At a meeting of Cheaters Anonymous, Anne-Christine wants to treat numerous notorious adulterers, including François, Bernard and Thibault. The men quickly realize their wrongdoing. After an initial therapy session, which should only be the beginning, all men have an excuse for the next session so that Anne-Christine ends up sitting alone in the therapy room.

Las Vegas

Husbands Fred and Greg go to Las Vegas together , Fred won the six-day trip. Greg's wife Stéphanie breaks up with her husband shortly afterwards by phone. After differences of opinion, the two men first fight, but then reconcile and spend the time with gambling and women. At the end of an eventful day, they both end up in the hotel together and have anal intercourse. They decide to stay in Las Vegas as a couple and subsequently become famous magicians and tiger owners, a reference to Siegfried and Roy .

production

The filming of men and women took place in Paris and Las Vegas from May to July . The costumes created Carine Sarfati , the Filmbauten come from Maamar Ech-Cheikh .

The film was released in French cinemas on February 29, 2012, where it was seen by around 2.3 million viewers. It also opened in German cinemas on November 1, 2012 and was released on DVD in Germany in March 2013.

Controversy

Men and Women originally contained further segments: Jan Kounen's short film Ultimate Fucking was removed from the film before the theatrical screening because there were negative reactions during test screenings and the film with the segment would not have received a rating of 12. In addition, the film with the segment was too long, argued Jean Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche in an interview. In the film, Sandra Mélanie Doutey meets a man in a bar, both of them go to a little house in the woods, where they get closer, where they are surprised by the woman's husband. The segment's film editor was Anny Danché.

An interlude by Alexandre Courtès was also cut from the film after test screenings: In the short sketch, businessman François (Jean Dujardin) is supposed to be in the office in New York City , but prefers to spend the day with his lover in a hotel. When his wife calls him worried, he tells her that everything is fine - in the background you can see an airplane flying into the twin tower and exploding. In France, despite the cut, the scene was seen as a possible stumbling block for Dujardin on his way to the Oscar for his portrayal in The Artist .

The posters for the film, criticized as sexist and degrading by the Autorité de régulation la publicité (ARPP), had to be removed from the public at the beginning of February 2012.

criticism

The film service found that in the overall film, “comically entertaining moments [predominate] that mostly deal ironically with behavioral patterns. The two main actors also contribute to the great cohesion of the film. "

“Between striking and true: fun gender fun with some psychological blows”, Cinema summarized the film.
