The nature reserve, which consists of three sub-areas, is located west of Müelte in the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland nature park . It places part of a residual deposit of the sessile oak-hornbeam forest, which is potentially naturally occurring here, under protection with very well-developed forest coats . In the northwest, the also wooded slope area to the Hesseltal, which is occupied by a hazel-root-oak-hornbeam forest, and the valley itself are included in the protected area. The two parts of the nature reserve located in the southeast form a total reserve of 6.98 hectares .
The tree layer is of grapes oak , hornbeam , small-leaved lime , white birch , Elsbeere and bird cherry formed. Sycamore maple can also be found on the northern slope of the Hesseltal . In the herb layer grow u. a. Spring Pea , Lungwort , Ordinary Haselwurz and spiked devil's claw . In the two southern sub-areas, the hornbeam is often replaced by sessile oak and pedunculate oak and the common hazel in the shrub layer. The same applies to the forest coats. Here you can find ball grass and different-leaved fescue as well as occasional pale forest birds , bird's nest roots and broad-leaved sitters in the herb layer. Warmth-loving penumbra species such as black flat pea , nodding pearl grass , turkish lily , white cinquefoil and bouquet bloomed perennial flower settle in loosened areas . Numerous termophilic shrub species settle near the edge of the forest, including common daphne , sloe , woolly snowball and common privet .
Within the reserve live many bats - Lesser Horseshoe Bat , Greater mouse-eared , pipistrelle , brown long-eared and Barbastelle - wintering in a Kalkstollen on the edge of the area. The forests provide habitat for red kites and hawks .
The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land . Other forests adjoin the main area of the protected area. A nature trail runs through the nature reserve .
