The Elsteraue near Ermlitz is a nature reserve in the municipality of Schkopau and the city of Leuna in the Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt .

General

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0323 is 152.3  hectares in size. It is part of the FFH area “Elster-Luppe-Aue” and the EU bird sanctuary “Saale-Elster-Aue south of Halle”. In the south it borders places at the nature reserve " Luppeaue at Horburg and Zweimen " and is otherwise the conservation area surrounded "Elster-Luppe-Aue". 47.1 hectares of the nature reserve are designated as a total reserve. The area has been under protection since 2002 (date of regulation: April 8, 2002). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Saalekreis.

The nature reserve lies between Halle (Saale) and Leipzig and places a section of the floodplain of the White Elster under protection. The floodplain is characterized by an alluvial forest complex with the oxbow river of the White Elster and other oxbow lakes. The floodplain area, in which a hardwood alluvial forest with pedunculate oak , field elm and ash grows with a transition to the oak-hornbeam forest, is no longer subject to the river dynamics. It is separated from the White Elster by its dike, but is irrigated by smoke during floods . In places there are grassland areas in the nature reserve. In addition, tall herbaceous vegetation , reed beds and small areas of sedges can be found. Extensive stocks of duckweed have settled on the oxbow river of the White Elster . The banks line u. a. Reed grass , shore wolf dragons and marsh sword lily .

The hardwood floodplain has a high proportion of dead wood . The shrub layer is formed in addition to the young growth of the trees of black elder , blood-red dogwood and European eucoat . The herbaceous layer is supported by numerous spring flowering plants such as wood anemone , yellow wood anemone , lesser celandine , forest Yellow Star , Hollow Corydalis , Arum and Märzenbecher formed. Softwood bushes , predominantly willow bushes, are interspersed in the hardwood floodplains.

The alluvial forests are the habitat of the birds of prey, the red kite , black kite and hawk . The nature reserve offers u. a. The middle woodpecker , teal duck , kingfisher and water strider also have a habitat. The deadwood is u. a. Habitat for various insects , including longhorn beetles and shredders . Mammals are z. The nature reserve is bordered to the north of the dike the White Elster, westward to a farm road and agricultural land , and to the south and east mostly also on agricultural land. An exception is in particular the southwest of the protected area, which merges in a narrow area directly into the forests of the “Luppeaue bei Horburg und Zweimen” nature reserve. In the area of ​​the area that was crossed by a high-voltage line, there is mostly extensively used grassland.

A little east of the nature reserve runs the federal highway 9 , which separates the alluvial forest complex from the nature reserve "Luppeaue" on Saxon territory.
