The post-mining landscape Kayna-Süd is a nature reserve in the town of Braunsbedra in the Saale district and the town of Weißenfels in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0253 is 350.42  hectares . Part of the nature reserve is also designated as an EU bird reserve “Post-mining landscape Kayna-Süd” (the bird reserve of around 222 hectares was designated in 2003). The area has been under protection since 2010 (date of regulation: November 6, 2010). Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the Saalekreis and the Burgenlandkreis.

description

The nature reserve was created as a post-mining landscape on the Querfurter Platte between Großkayna , a district of Braunsbebra in the north, and Reichardtswerbe , a district of Weißenfels in the south. It places the southern part of the Großkaynaer See , created by flooding a residual open pit , with its bank areas as well as other bank areas in the west of the lake and the adjacent areas under protection. The different bank areas of the lake are partly shaped as shallow flushing fringes , but partly also as steep banks. Extensive reed beds and siltation zones adjoin the bank areas, especially in the south of the lake . The reeds are the habitat of a reed warbler population with a large number of individuals, including the reed warbler , swamp warbler and pond warbler, and offer the marsh harrier a suitable habitat. The reed beds and open water areas are also of great importance for migratory bird species . The water areas are resting places and feeding habitats for numerous water birds . So rest here u. a. Osprey , hen harrier , short-eared owl , seeds , Bläss- and gray goose , cormorant , common snipe , storm , silver and black-headed gull , great crested grebe , little grebe , Smew , Goosander , whistling , haddock , Tableware and tufted duck . Some of the bird species mentioned are also native here. Also Sandpiper , bitterns and short-eared owl are found here.

The areas adjacent to the water surface of the lake are characterized by open and semi-open areas with raw soil locations , bushes and pioneer forests. They offer valuable habitats to a species-rich flora and fauna. In 1995/96, for example, more than 50 wild bees , over 100 spiders , 20 dragonflies , 25 butterflies and around 120 moths as well as nine species of locusts were detected here in special studies in 1995/96 . In investigations in the years 2009 to 2011 u. a. 17 species of dragonflies and 14 species of locusts detected.

Various types of orchids such as brown-red sitter , swamp sitter , broad-leaved orchid and bee garlic also settle in the nature reserve . Other rare and protected plant species such as the common cat's paw and Austrian flax are also found here.

The open or partially bushy areas in the nature reserve are also the habitat of a species-rich avifauna. So here are Harrier , red and black kite , red-backed shrike , shrike , barred warbler , Bluethroat , Woodlark , Tawny Pipit and Wheatear home. Turnneck and bee-eater , who use the steep banks of the lake for the construction of nesting tubes, occur as well as sand martins. In surveys of the bird populations in the EU bird sanctuary between 2009 and 2011, a total of 92 bird species were found, 54 of which were also breeding here.

Since large parts of the nature reserve slowly become overgrown in the course of the succession , grazing management is necessary to preserve the open areas. Parts of the nature reserve in the south, which are also designated as an EU bird sanctuary, have been grazed with Konik ponies and Galloway cattle since November 2008 . Also, water buffalo were originally used for the care of the land, but they harmed the reed beds.

Agricultural areas border the nature reserve in the west, south and east . In the north are the water areas of the Großkaynaer See used for local recreation . The nature reserve can partly be experienced via a paved circular path. There are observation towers in the north-east and south-west of the nature reserve .
