The Hirschrodaer Graben is a nature reserve in the municipality of Balgstädt in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0201 is approximately 157  hectares . It is partly part of the 187 hectare FFH area of the same name and is surrounded by the landscape protection areas “Unstrut-Triasland” and “Finne-Triasland”. The area has been under protection since 2001 (date of regulation: March 23, 2001). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Burgenlandkreis.

The nature reserve is located west of Freyburg (Unstrut) and south of Laucha an der Unstrut in the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland nature park . It protects the Hirschrodaer Graben, a branched Kerbtal , partly cut deep into the Muschelkalk of the Bad Bibra-Freyburger Muschelkalkplatte, until just before the town of Balgstädt on the edge of the Unstruttal. The Hirschrodaer Graben is predominantly characterized by near-natural deciduous forest complexes, which are formed on the slopes by forest rennet, sessile oak and hornbeam forests, dry oak forests and small-scale remains of linden forests . The bush and herb layer of the oak-hornbeam forests is mainly made up of hazelnut , golden nettle , Turkish lily , ringwort and real lungwort .

In the canyon areas with shady and humid locations dominate ash forests as well as temporary wetland areas . On the Muschelkalk slopes, there are small areas of open sites and orchards with semi- arid grass and oat meadows with species-rich fringing communities and snowball-dogwood dry bushes in the transition to the deciduous forest communities. Other biotopes in the nature reserve are limestone gravel corridors with germander blue grass dry grass in training with black-red sitter and dry tall herbaceous corridors .

A special feature of the Hirschrodaer Graben is its abundance of orchids . So here are rich occurrences of the hybrid orchid (a cross between purple and red orchid ) as well as especially red orchid , stately orchid , three-tooth orchid , pale orchid , white and greenish wood hyacinth and flywort . In addition, z. B. silver thistle , common pasque flower , spring adonis , small and large rattling pots , fringed gentian, golden-haired aster , arable umbel and German elephant .

The nature reserve is also the habitat of a species-rich avifauna . So here are u. a. Hawk , Red Kite , Honey Buzzard , Central and black woodpecker , wryneck , red-backed shrike and the great gray shrike home. Furthermore, the nature reserve offers the pine marten in the forest areas and in the open land areas Mauswiesel and Iltis a habitat. The badger is also native to the reserve. The dry and semi-arid grasslands, dry bushes and fringe communities are also the habitat of a species-rich invertebrate fauna . In the protected area u. a. also Segelfalter , dovetail , Rockrose-Grünwidderchen and amphipyra perflua and various grasshoppers before, including out in the state of Saxony-Anhalt on the Red List Blue-winged Grasshopper , rufous grasshopper , phaneroptera falcata , two-point spike cricket and long probe thorn cricket.

The open dry grass areas are mowed for maintenance. Grazing with sheep is aimed at. The nature reserve largely borders on agricultural land .
