Schmoner Busch, Spielberger Höhe and Elsloch is a nature reserve in the city of Querfurt and the municipality of Steigra in the Saale district as well as the small town of Nebra (Unstrut) and the municipality of Karsdorf in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0122 is around 298  hectares . Around 60 hectares of this are in the Burgenland district. The nature reserve is congruent with the FFH area “Schmoner Busch, Spielberger Höhe and Elsloch” and is surrounded in the south and west by the landscape protection area “Unstrut-Triasland”. The area has been under protection since 1994 (date of ordinance: June 14, 1994). The nature reserve "Hänge bei Niederschmon", which was designated on May 1, 1961, was incorporated into it. The responsible nature conservation authority is the upper nature conservation authority of the Halle regional council.

The nature reserve is located southwest of Querfurt in the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland nature park . It represents the south-western and southern layer levels slope of Querfurter shell trough in the transition of the Querfurter plate for Nebraer Unstruttal under protection and thereby extends over a length of about 9 km from the Popp height northeast of low Schmon on the Spielberger height at Spielberg up to the tap Bergen northwest of Steigra. The plateau and the upper part of up to 60 meters sloping steep slope , in the deep gullies are cut and trenches is of Unterer shell with ledges , strips and Riedeln formed. In the lower slope area there are silt and marl stones of the red formations of the Upper Buntsandstein.

Some of the formerly federally owned areas in the nature reserve, around 25 hectares in total, belong to the NABU Foundation National Natural Heritage , which they acquired from BVVG Bodenverwertungs- und -verwaltungs GmbH (BVVG). At the end of 2012, BVVG Bodenverwertungs- und -verwaltungs GmbH offered two more areas for sale near Schmon and Grockstädt, of which the Nendel Natural Heritage Foundation had an area of ​​around 21 hectares at the end of 2012 and the NABU National Natural Heritage Foundation the other, around 23 hectares Area u. a. acquired with funds from Lotto-Toto GmbH Saxony-Anhalt.

In parts of the nature reserve - especially in the area of ​​the Schmoner Busch and the Grockstädter Holz - forest rennet, sessile oak and hornbeam forest , to which the common ash joins in Runsen. Sometimes summer linden also occur. The herb layer is u. a. formed by forest rennet , turkish lily , forest twig , large two-leaf , golden nettle , bird's nest , stendel root , liverwort and common hazel root . On the upper slope edges in Schmoner Busch increased a loosened Tilia cordata forest with maple , serviceberry , Cornelian and Woolly snowball . The forests are characterized by a high proportion of old and dead wood . Parts of the forests in the nature reserve were historically managed as coppice forests .

The forest coats are often formed by warmth-loving bush communities with snowball and dogwood , which also appear as flat bushes. Closely dovetailed with these is the blood cork's bill - deer root - hem .

Unforested areas are occupied by dry and semi-arid grasslands , especially in the central and southern parts of the area. Large areas of furrow , pinnate, and semi-dry grass with purple orchid , flywort and horseshoe clover , rarely also great handelwort , spring adonis and silver thistle, as well as oat meadows occur over a large area . Meadowsweet meadow oat societies can be found to a small extent. In small areas, on limestone gravel heaps, gamander blue grass dry grass with brown-red stendelwort occurs , on limestone rock platforms Baden pangrass meadows and on shallow ground Valais fescue and awl grass dry grass. Parts of the slopes are also free of vegetation. Here the Röt formations are as geotopes minded . Quarries that have been left open are also part of the nature reserve.

Ortalsborn

Ranging from Urtalsborn - also called Ortalsborn - a karst spring south of Spielberg and Elslochquelle in the southeast of the protected area and in sinks were are wet areas and wet meadows and the remains of alder forests part of the nature reserve. The narrow-leaved Merk also lives here . Deserted orchards can also be found, but they are becoming increasingly bushy.

The nature reserve is the habitat of a species-rich fauna. Here live u. a. Reversible neck , red backed shrike and gray shrike . Also Ortolan and Bunting are present in small numbers, as well as the barred warbler , which reaches its western distribution limit here. Even bats as greater mouse-eared and Barbastelle find a suitable habitat in the protected area. The high proportion of old and dead wood in the forests is a prerequisite for a diverse insect fauna . So here are z. B. to find stag beetles and small oaks . The dry locations offer habitats for mountain witches , swallowtails , sailing butterflies , cicadas , bedbugs and beetles .

Parts of the protected area are extensively grazed with sheep for maintenance.

The nature reserve is almost completely surrounded by agricultural land . Between Niederschmon and Grockstädt and between Spielberg and Liederstädt it borders on the disused railway line between Querfurt and Nebra (Unstrut).
