Nature reserve "Muschelkalkhang der Nietleben-Bennstedter Mulde"

The shell limestone slopes of the Nietleben-Bennstedter Mulde are a nature reserve in the municipality of Salzatal in the Saale district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0266 is 73  hectares in size. Most of it is part of the FFH area “Muschelkalkhangs west of Halle”. The area has been under protection since 2004 (date of regulation: September 20, 2004). The former “Schauchenberg” nature reserve, which was designated in 1967 and has an area of 3.6 hectares, has now merged into it. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Saalekreis.

The nature reserve, which consists of five sub-areas, is located northwest of Halle (Saale) in the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park . It extends in a semicircle between the towns of Bennstedt , Köllme and Lieskau and places a mosaic of different, predominantly dry biotope types under protection on the slopes of Schauchenberg, Kirchenberg and Nikolausberg, which are mainly exposed to the west and north and belong to a limestone massif of the Lower Muschelkalks . In the nature reserve there are rock and gravel corridors , dry and semi-dry lawns , field hedges , field trees, orchards , abandoned quarries and an extensively used arable herb reserve, which was designated in 1985 and is located on the plateau area. The faces are surrounded by many shallow soil, low-yielding arable line . Rocky and very shallow locations are occupied by stone herb-blue fescue corridors and germander blue-grass dry grass. On gravel-rich soils, grapevine-cilantro grass corridors occur. Furrow fescue and pinnate turf settle on deeper soils. On some of the upper edges of the slope there are fescue peashock grass lawns. Numerous orchids such as orchids settle on the dry grassland . B. the orchid herb . Furthermore, u. a. Baden's bluegrass, hair peas , feather grass , silver thistle , real globe flower , gray sun rose , steppe wolf milk , horse donkey and spring adonis flower can be found. The arable herb sanctuary is home to typical species of the corymbs-Adonisröschengesellschaft such as arable umbels and round-leaved rabbit ears . Hedges and woody plants are made up of softwood , dog and wine rose , privet , blackthorn and single hawthorn . Some less steep slopes have been reforested with trees that are not part of the site, such as black pine , bladder bush , snowberry , lilac and robinia .

The nature reserve is a habitat for numerous endangered species of butterflies , bees and hoverflies . Furthermore, 17 grasshopper and 77 ground beetle species have been identified in the nature reserve . Various bats live in the niches and tunnels of the former quarries . Some of the tunnels also serve as winter quarters, for example for the pug bat and the great mouse-eared bat . The quarries, in which shell limestone was extracted in the past, represent valuable geotopes .

In the nature reserve breed and. a. Quail , red-backed shrike , gray bunting and sparrowhawk warbler . In addition, u. a. Honey buzzard and wryneck are native here.

Parts of the reserve used to be grazed with sheep. To preserve the dry grass communities, decussing measures and the resumption of extensive grazing are necessary. The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land . At Köllme and Bennstedt, it is also directly adjacent to the residential development of the places and in places to public roads. The former Halle Klaustor – Hettstedt railway line runs through the area to the northwest of Lieskau . The federal motorway 143 (Halle western bypass), the further construction of which is planned between the federal highway 80 near Bennstedt and the federal highway 14 near Görbitz, would run between the sub-areas near Lieskau in the east and the sub-areas near Köllme in the west.
