Saale-Elster-Aue near Halle

The Saale-Elster-Aue near Halle is a nature reserve in the city of Halle (Saale) and in the municipality of Schkopau in the Saale district in Saxony-Anhalt .
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0173 is around 915 hectares . The city of Halle accounts for 315.91 hectares of this. The area is part of the FFH area "Elster-, Luppe-Aue between Merseburg and Halle" and the bird sanctuary "Saale-Elster-Aue south of Halle". In the north-west it borders on the nature reserve " Abtei und Saaleaue bei Planena ". The nature reserve is largely surrounded by the "Saale" nature reserve. The area has been under protection since 1998 (date of regulation: February 11, 1998). The former nature reserves “Burgholz” and “Collenbeyer Holz”, which were designated as of May 1, 1961, have merged into the nature reserve. In 2003 a nest protection zone was set up in the area of the Döllnitzer wood. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the city of Halle (Saale) and the Saalekreis.
The nature reserve is located southeast of Halle (Saale) and northeast of Merseburg . It places an area of the Saale-Elster-Aue under protection that is largely subject to natural water dynamics and is flooded by the Saale or the Weisse Elster or at least influenced by smoky water during flooding . The area also represents an important retention area .
The area is dominated by grassland areas . The open land areas are z. B. taken by burning cones floodplain meadows and moist tall herbaceous vegetation. In addition, arable land can be found within the nature reserve that is to be converted into grassland areas. On the extensively managed hay meadows settle and. a. Large meadow button , dye notch , angular leek and Siberian iris . In addition, numerous other plants have been identified. Near-natural hardwood floodplain forests with oaks, elms and ash trees, which used to be widespread in the floodplain, are only present in small areas as remnants, for example in the Burgholz in the north, between Döllnitz and Burgliebenau in the southeast and in the Collenbeyer Holz in the south of the protected area. Larger areas on the White Elster are still occupied by softwood forests with white willows and black poplars . To the southwest of Döllnitz there are also large areas of reed beds , u. a. with swamp wolf milk , available.
The nature reserve is the habitat of a species-rich avifauna . So here are z. B. Red and black kite as well as honey buzzard native. The different types of biotopes offer different bird species a suitable habitat. The lowland forests harboring nightingale , black woodpecker and the middle spotted woodpecker , a small number of well Grauspecht , the wetlands are the habitat of marsh harrier , bittern , reed bunting and various warblers and Rail species , including Little Crake and Spotted Crake . The open land areas are the habitat of red backed killer , lapwing , snipe , corncrake , yellow wagtail , hawk warbler and whinchat . Even white storks are native to the area. They use the meadow areas for foraging. The nature reserve is also the habitat of the kingfisher . The largest gray heron colony in Saxony-Anhalt is located in Collenbeyer Holz in the southwest of the nature reserve . The white-tailed eagle breeds in the Döllnitz wood.
The nature reserve has a meaning as a resting and sleeping space for a large number of endangered bird species such as black stork and crane and various gulls , ducks , including pintail , shoveler , wigeon , teal , Gadwall , geese as white-fronted goose , gray goose and bean goose , divers and waders , including wood ruff and ruff .
The old and dead wood rich riparian forest areas as well as the reed areas also offer a habitat for a species-rich insect fauna with beetles , dragonflies and butterflies . The waters in the nature reserve are the habitat of chub , brook loach , ruff and moderlieschen . A special feature is the occurrence of two endangered leaf pod species . Waters and wet meadows are also the habitat of u. a. Great crested newt , common garlic toad , moor frog and grass snake . The wet meadows also offer the harvest mouse a suitable habitat. Brown hare , marten-like and various bats are also native to the nature reserve. The beaver has also settled here again.
The nature reserve is cut in the northwest by the federal highway 91 . The Halle – Bebra railway line crosses the nature reserve a little east of the main road . The new Erfurt – Leipzig / Halle line and its connection to the Halle – Bebra line also cross the area. The new line itself runs on an almost 6.5 km long viaduct and roughly follows the course of an existing overhead line .
