The first MTV Australia Video Music Awards were presented on March 3, 2005 at The Big Top , Sydney . They were broadcast on MTV Australia . The event had a circus theme and was moderated by the cast of the docu-soap The Osbournes .

The winners of the evening were The Black Eyed Peas and Green Day , who were the only artists to receive two awards. The nomination list was headed by Gwen Stefani and Outkast , each with four nominations.

There were appearances by Green Day , who played two of their hit songs from the album American Idiot . In addition, Natalie Imbruglia had her new single Shiver and Kelly Osbourne with her single One Word premiere. Carmen Electra performed a striptease .
