Marathon is a city in Monroe County in the US state of Florida with 8297 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Marathon consists of the islands of Knight's Key , Boot Key , Key Vaca , Fat Deer Key , Long Point Key , Crawl Key and Grassy Key , which are part of the Florida Keys island chain . To the south, Key Colony Beach borders the city, which is approximately 70 km from Key West and 150 km from Miami .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 8,297 inhabitants were distributed over 6,187 households. The population density was 370.4 inh / km². 90.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 4.8% as African-Americans , 0.3% as Indians, and 1.1% as Asian Americans . 1.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 26.8% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 29.7% of all households lived in 22.2% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 59.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.68.
18.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 20.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 33.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 28.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 48 years. 51.9% of the population were male and 48.1% were female.
The median annual income was $ 49,633, with 17.0% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 78.11% of the population, 20.96% spoke Spanish and 0.93% had another mother tongue.

The George Adderley House and Sombrero Key Light are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
economy
Marathon lives mainly from tourism. Most of the visitors are from the United States and are sport fishermen. Foreign visitors are more likely to be found in Key West .
traffic
The Overseas Highway ( US 1 , SR 5 ) connects the Florida Keys and runs from Key West via Homestead to Miami . The highway is the only connection to the mainland and also serves as the only escape route in the event of a hurricane . To the west of Marathon, the highway also leads over the Seven Mile Bridge , made famous by the film True Lies , among other things .
Marathon has its own airport, Florida Keys Marathon Airport (ICAO: KMTH), which is served by several airlines, but mainly serves private flights.
