Marek Švec grew up in his hometown Havlíčkův Brod and started wrestling there as a teenager in 1979. He later came to the PSK Olymp Prague sports club via Ostrava and was trained there by Erwin Varga. At a height of 1.86 m, Marek Švec has been wrestling light heavyweight since the beginning of his senior years in 1992 (initially up to 90 kg body weight, then up to 96 kg / 97 kg body weight). He wrestles exclusively in Greco-Roman. Style. He is a sports teacher, but denies z. Zt makes a living from wrestling. If you train twice a day, this is not possible any other way. Since the 2003/04 season he has been wrestling for 1. Luckenwalder SC in the German Bundesliga, in which he contributed several times to the German team championship.

After finishing his active career as a wrestler, he aims to work as a coach.

Marek Švec's international career began in 1994 with participation in the European Championship in Greco-Roman. Light heavyweight style in Athens . He reached a 14th place. Even at the next international championships, he did not manage to place in the front field. He came 20th at the 1994 World Championships in Tampere , 10th at the 1995 European Championships in Besançon and 20th at the 1995 World Championships in Prague . At the European Championships in Budapest in 1996 , he achieved his best result to date with a seventh place.

In 1996 he took part in the Olympic Games for the first time in Atlanta . He came in a good 8th place there. He had to fight hard for this place with victories over Rozy Rejepow from Turkmenistan , Incio Vasquez, Peru , Moustafa Hussain from Egypt and Reynaldo Rudolfo Pena Borroto, Cuba . He lost to Aljaksandr Sidarenka from Belarus and Derrick Waldroup from the United States.

At the European Championships in 1997 in Kouvola he won over Pius Grenz, Germany , Bakuri Gogitidze, Georgia and Əsəd Əliyev from Azerbaijan and lost to Taimuras Edishashvili from Russia , which brought him to 8th place. At the world championship of the same year in Breslau he lost to Maik Bullmann from Germany and Mikael Ljungberg from Sweden and only came in 21st place.

At the 1998 World Cup in Gävle , Sweden , he achieved the first major success of his career. With victories over Pajo Isosević from Yugoslavia , Gennadi Tschaidsche from Georgia and Mikael Ljungberg, he reached the final, in which he was defeated by Gogi Koguaschwili from Russia.

In 1999 there was a severe setback for Marek Švec at the European Championships in Sofia , because he was defeated there against Dawid Saldadze from Ukraine and Andrzej Wroński from Poland , dropped out and only came in 20th place. Things went much better for him at this year's World Cup in Athens , where he won over Igor Grabovetski from Moldova , Sjarhej Lishtwan from Belarus and Josip Pavičić from Yugoslavia. After losing to Hakkı Başar from Turkey , he came in 8th place.

In 2000 Marek Švec took part in the Olympic Games again. In Sydney he retired early after defeats against Garrett Lowney , USA and Gogi Koguaschwili and reached 18th place. A little consolation for him was then, towards the end of 2000, when he won the student world title at the World University Championship in Tokyo ahead of Marek Sitnik , Poland and Mehmet Özal , Turkey.

In 2001 Marek Švec reached an excellent 5th place at the World Championship in Patras with victories over Mindaugas Ežerskis from Lithuania and Karam Mohammed Gaber Ibragim from Egypt and a defeat against Petru Sudureac from Romania . In 2002 he reached 7th place both at the European Championships in Seinäjoki / Finland and at the World Championships in Moscow . It is noteworthy that he won victories over Petru Sudureac and Dawid Saldadze in Moscow.

The year 2003 was not very successful for him. At the European Championships in Belgrade he only came in 12th after two defeats and at the World Championships in Créteil he won over Roman Medina from Slovakia , but was eliminated after a defeat by Mirko Englich from Germany and only came in 21st place.

In 2004 Marek Švec failed to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games in Athens . All the more regrettable because he was actually in excellent shape, as proven by winning the bronze medal at the European Championships in Haparanda . He won there over the world champion of 2002 Mehmet Özal and Roman Meduna, then lost to Sjarhej Lishtwan and fought his way to 3rd place with a victory over the strong Ukrainian Dawid Saldadze .

In 2005 he took 5th place at the European Championships in Varna and 10th place at the World Championships in Budapest . The decisive defeats he suffered from Hamza Yerlikaya from Turkey and Justin Ruiz from the United States. The year 2006 was very successful for Marek Švec. He won this year at the European Championships in Moscow with victories over Robert Petrosjan from Armenia and Rami Hietaniemi from Finland, a defeat against Mychajlo Nikolajew from Ukraine and a victory over Schata Narmanja from Belarus Bronze medal. He was even more successful at the World Championships in Guangzhou / China , because there he fought his way through to the final with victories over Kenzo Kato from Japan , Theodoros Tounousidis, Greece, the Olympic and multiple world champion Hamza Yerlikaya and the European champion from 2003 Ramas Nosadze from Georgia , in which he was defeated by the surprise man Heiki Nabi from Estonia by just a few points. This was the second time he was vice world champion .

After a somewhat disappointing 9th place at the 2007 European Championships in Sofia , which can be traced back to a defeat against Balasz Kiss from Hungary in the second fight, Marek Švec then won another medal at the 2007 World Cup in Baku with 3rd place. After a defeat in the first round against Ramas Nosadze, he defeated Justin Ruiz, Jimmy Lidberg from Sweden, Elis Guri from Albania and Daigoro Timoncini from Italy one after the other .

At the European Championships in Tampere in 2008 Marek Švec came 11th with a win over Theodoros Tousounidis and a loss to Jimmy Lidberg. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , Marek Švec won over Kalojan Dintschew from Bulgaria and the reigning world champion from 2007 Ramas Nosadze . In the third fight, however, he was defeated by the extremely strong Russian Aslanbek Chuschtow on points. Also in the fight for 3rd place and thus for the bronze medal he had to accept a point defeat against Ässet Mämbetow from Kazakhstan, who was subsequently banned for doping . With that he reached the ungrateful, because medalless, fifth place. By canceling the results of Ässet Mämbetow, he moved up to third place.
