action
While rescuing a group of sailors trapped in a sunken nuclear submarine , Jonas Taylor, a member of the rescue team, sees the submarine's hull damaged by an unknown creature . Taylor leaves two sailors behind because he is afraid they will all die waiting for them. When they appear, the damaged submarine explodes. Taylor's claim that a giant marine animal caused the disaster is supported by teammate Dr. Heller rejected; he believes Taylor suffered from pressure-related psychosis and blames him for the loss of her friends.
Five years later, billionaire Jack Morris arrives at the underwater research facility "Mana One", which he finances. Dr. Minway Zhang and his daughter Suyin, an oceanologist , oversee a mission to explore a deeper section of the Mariana Trench hidden by a thermocline cloud of hydrogen sulfide. The mission is carried out by Lori (Taylor's ex-wife), Toshi and The Wall in a dive boat. The mission seems to be going well until a very large creature hits the underwater ship, causing it to lose contact with "Mana One".
James "Mac" Mackreides, another crew member on the station, suggests that Taylor be brought on a rescue operation. Despite Dr. Heller's objections, Zhang and Mac travel to Thailand to recruit Taylor. Meanwhile, Suyin tries to carry out the rescue himself: Her boat is attacked by a giant squid . Just before it threatens to burst, a massive shark kills the attacker. Taylor agrees to come to the rescue and reaches the trapped underwater ship. When the giant shark returns, however, Toshi sacrifices himself by closing the hatch and casting off the rescue ship so that Taylor, Lori and The Wall can safely escape.
Back on the "Mana One", the crew discovers that the shark is a megalodon , the largest shark ever living, which has been considered extinct for millions of years. While playing, Suyin's daughter goes to the viewing platform and sees the megalodon through the glass. When Suyin and Taylor rush over to her, they see a whale that is being eaten alive by the giant shark. The crew notes that the megalodon came from the depths of the trench and swam through a hole in the thermocline created by the explosion of the thermal opening. The group decides to pursue and poison the megalodon. While Suyin injects the megalodon with a fatal dose of etorphine, her oxygen mask is damaged, but Taylor is able to save and resuscitate her. He himself is skeptical that the hunted shark is actually the right one, as its teeth do not match the previous attack. Shortly afterwards, a colossal megalodon emerges from the water, devouring the smaller megalodon, killing The Wall, Dr. Heller and Dr. Zhang and capsizes the boat. The surviving crew returns to "Mana One" with two rubber boats. Morris announces that he has meanwhile notified local governments and naval forces to seek help.
But when it gets dark, Morris tries to kill the megalodon himself. He instructs a helicopter crew to drop modified depth charges on the fish, citing the risk of costly claims for damages from the creature's victims or their survivors. When he approaches the carcass of the supposed megalodon in a boat, he discovers that it is a whale. A short time later, the megalodon approaches the whale carcass and Morris excitedly gives the order to accelerate the boat immediately. The sudden recoil throws him overboard without the skipper noticing. The megalodon devours the carcass with Morris. Taylor and the rest of the Mana One crew discover that Morris has indeed not contacted any of the governments, and they decide to track and kill the shark while it is on its way to a crowded beach in Sanya Bay.
The megalodon kills several beachgoers before the crew of "Mana One" plays the sound of a whale call to get the shark's attention. Taylor and Suyin attempt unsuccessfully to kill the Megalodon with rigged torpedoes , severely damaging Taylor's submarine. Ultimately, however, he succeeds in slitting the megalodon's stomach with parts of his boat and shortly afterwards stabbing his eye with a harpoon. Numerous sharks in the area register the megalodon's blood and jointly attack the creature, which ultimately dies. During the fight, Suyin was able to evacuate everyone to a boat where a Chinese couple are getting married. Taylor and Suyin consider taking a vacation.

reception
With a budget of 130 million US dollars , the blockbuster at box offices worldwide achieved sales of 527.8 million US dollars.
The film service sums up that the "action comedy, which oscillates undecidedly between tension and humor [...] wants to make trashy animal horror about a monster fish with a mega-budget family-friendly" and criticizes that "over the bombastic show values [...] the protagonists as well as a compelling story forget" become. Overall, it is a "toothless attempt to quote genre role models and to absorb tension peaks through clumsy punchlines."
