history
After the area was surveyed, the land was named Township No. 3, Seventh Range North of Waldo Patent (T3 R7 NWP) . The area was bought by Johnathan Hastings, who later had a partner named Welk from Boston. They sold most of the land to settlers, with Russell Kittridge of Bangor buying the rest of the land. Benjamin Sargent of Methuen, Massachusetts was the first to settle in 1802. Initially only with his 14-year-old son Theophilus, the family was brought up later. When Sargent went to fetch the family, the boy was left alone. He did the job well at first, but one day a bear ransacked his supplies. Thanks to the help of an Indian tribe that moved through the area, he was able to bridge the time until his father's return. The chief of the tribe left his son Ateon Oseon with Theophilus to help him. His father did not return with the rest of the family until the beginning of winter. More settlers followed. On January 21, 1823, the area was organized as a town named Milo.
It was Theophilus who chose the name Milo for the new town. It was named after the Greek athlete Milo of Croton . A dam was built over Traftons Falls in 1823 by Winborn Swett. Later he built the first sawmill, which was followed by other water mills. In 1901 and 1902, the American Thread Company, a bobbin manufacturer, erected buildings on West Main Street. Another sawmill produced spools and cardboard boxes. The Milo Textile Company was founded in 1922. She produced high quality machine threads. There is a thriving dairy in Milo.
Milo is part of the Three Rivers Community Alliance , a loose community association. The headquarters of the association is in Milo.
