Ministry of Public Security (Israel)
The Ministry of Public Security ( Hebrew המשרד לביטחון הפנים), also the Ministry of Homeland Security , is an Israeli ministry. The Ministry controls the Israeli police , the Israeli prisons and the fire service in Israel . The Minister of Public Security ( Hebrew שר לביטחון פנים, Sar LeVitahon Pnim ) is the political leader of the ministry.
Until 1995 this position was Minister of Police ( Hebrew שר המשטרה, Sar HaMishtara ) known. It is a separate ministry - separate from the Ministry of Internal Affairs . The first police minister, Bechor-Shalom Shitrit, was a former police officer and was in charge from Israel's declaration of independence in 1948 to a month before his death in January 1967, worked in 14 governments, making him the longest-serving minister. The post was removed under Menachem Begin when he became Prime Minister in 1977 but reinstated when Shimon Peres became Prime Minister in 1984 .
