action

Molly Bloom has gained a lot in her life, but has also lost quite a lot. Her skiing career ended prematurely because of a serious back injury in a qualifying run for the Olympic Games. This seems to have driven a wedge into the already strained relationship with her father.

Molly considers other ways to make money and moves from Colorado to California, where she works as the personal assistant to a man who plays poker . Molly quietly becomes the real head of the business and establishes buy-ins of $ 10,000, which doesn't seem to be a problem for the wealthy clientele. When her colleagues and above all her boss try to keep her out of business, Molly moves to New York, where she organizes poker games with even more exclusive guests and even higher buy-ins. Molly quickly resorts to drugs, and when she also grants access to members of three different Russian criminal families, the buy-ins even rise to 250,000 US dollars. She will soon be offering two games a day, six days a week, and will make sure that as many beautiful women as possible are present at the events.

One day, however, Molly is arrested and charged by the FBI as prosecutors hope to learn details about her regulars through her. As she faces a long prison sentence, she tries to get the competent lawyer Charlie Jaffey engaged. However, he is initially reluctant to take on the case because Molly's assets have been confiscated and she cannot pay his fees. Nevertheless, he takes over her defense.

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film shows a world in which illegal gambling as well as alcohol and drug consumption are part of everyday life. However, this is repeatedly questioned critically, and the negative sides of the glamorous way of life are shown very clearly [...] Even an emotionally intense scene in which Molly Bloom is threatened and beaten up can be seen and processed by viewers aged 12 and over in the context of the story become."

Reviews and grossing results

The film reached a value of 82 percent on the Tomatometer from Rotten Tomatoes .

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter says his overdue debut as a director entertain Aaron Sorkin , leave a plunge this wild story in every detail and this is an outstanding Operating the occupation, which help him to tell them.

Knut Elstermann from MDR Kultur thinks that the "tough, endlessly long and lame directorial debut of the great author Aaron Sorkin unfortunately fails on every level, because on the one hand it hardly allows for ambivalences and on the other hand has no attitude towards his ambivalent heroine:" Everything is commented excessively up to and including to the embarrassingly flat rapid therapy of her father complex at the end. And even the secret, wicked poker rounds seem completely harmless. There is more going on with bingo in the nursing home. "

Anne Haeming from Spiegel Online also thinks that the film biography remains flat, because Sorkin cannot make up his mind because, on the one hand, he combines two worlds with poker and sport, which he arbitrarily dismantles as a pool of metaphors for life: Team spirit there. Don't let yourself be looked at, chase down icy slopes. On the other hand, the topic is fraying for him. “On the surface, this seems to be an initiation story about someone who was almost at the top in her sport, then can only afford the sofa of friends in LA, Haeming continues, but ultimately thanks to hers fixed brains become irreplaceable for their boss.

Anna Wollner from Deutschlandfunk Kultur thinks the film lives from the voice-over comments and its leading actress Jessica Chastain : “Even if Sorkin sometimes seems more interested in her cleavage than in her character, Molly's Game is one of the best poker films the recent past - without taking the tension out of the game, but solely from acting and closely observing his heroine. "

Barbara Munker from Aachener Nachrichten described the acting performance of Jessica Chastain as an Oscar-worthy performance, because “she is confident, sexy and disciplined in holding the reins in the poker scene, which is dominated by extremely rich men and big egos. Chastain is the narrator, she fires with bursts of words and appears in almost every scene. "She criticized the end of the film, but praised the film as such:" Sorkin brings the father back into play for a maudlin meeting. In the end, the director adds a bit thick: The possible attempt to give the drama even more depth would not have been necessary. With fast-paced entertainment, a captivating leading actress and the insight into an otherwise completely hidden world, 'Mollys Game' already has enough to offer. "

The worldwide revenue of the film from theatrical screenings so far amounts to approximately 59.3 million US dollars.
