Santa Cruz de Mompós (also Mompox ) is a Colombian municipality ( municipio ) in Bolívar, southeast of Cartagena .

Mompós is located on the lower reaches of the Río Magdalenas . Here the Cauca flows into the Río Magdalena. The city is also known for its goldsmithing .

Mompós is located in the south of Bolívar on Isla Margarita in the sub-region of Depresión Momposina . Mompós is 291 km from Cartagena and 320 km from Barranquilla . The place is at an altitude of 33 meters and has an average annual temperature of 31 ° C.

The municipality borders on Magangué to the west, Pinillos and San Fernando to the south, the municipalities of Santa Ana , San Zenón and San Sebastián de Buenavista in the Magdalena department to the east and Talaiga Nuevo and Cicuco to the north .

The island is home to the famous Colombian musician and singer Totó la Momposina and her musicians (many family members). Their music is a fusion of African and Spanish influences as well as the harmonies of the indigenous people of the region. These Indian elements are particularly evident in the polyphonic melodies played by the gaitas (flutes). The texts often refer to life on the Río Magdalena , which played an important role as a transport route in the history of Colombia. The variety of ethnic influences becomes clear from the instruments used: bombo, tambor macho (llamador), tambor hembra (repicador) or tambor mayor, guache, marimbula, millo flute. By combining the melodies of the gaitas and the rhythms of the various drums, the music is often received as hypnotic.

history

The city of Mompós was founded on May 3, 1537 by Alfonso de Heredia on behalf of the governor of Cartagena Juan de Santa Cruz , in the territory of the Malibúes. The Indian chief of the Malibúes Mompoj helped the conquistadors to establish the settlement. In gratitude, the Spaniards named the city after the chief and the governor of Cartagena as Santa Cruz de Mompox . Santa Cruz literally means " Holy Cross ", which is still reflected in the city flag.

Mompós was an important city in the viceroyalty of New Granada . When the German researcher Alexander von Humboldt made his trip to South America in 1801, he rested in Mompós from April 25 to May 5.

On August 6, 1810, Mompós was one of the first cities in New Granada to declare itself completely independent from Spain.
