NGC 5783 is a 12.9 mag barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Bear Guardian and about 111 million light years from the Milky Way. Together with the galaxy NGC 5788, which is about five times further away, it forms an optical double galaxy.

The property was discovered by Lewis A. Swift in 1887 .

The second entry in the catalog under the number NGC 5785 is based on Swift's observation of April 21 of the same year and is due to the fact that Swift distributed his observations in various letters to Dreyer ; in addition, the position information is more precise for NGC 5783 , the description fits better for NGC 5785
