The 1976/77 season was the 39th regular staging of the National League A , the highest Swiss league in ice hockey . For the fifth time in its club history, SC Bern became Swiss champions, while EV Zug was relegated to the NLB.

In a common main round, each of the eight teams played four games against each group opponent, making the total number of games per team 28. The first place in the main round was champion. The last placed in the main round was relegated to the NLB. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a tie. If you lost, you didn't get any points.
