Dalbek Gorge nature reserve

The Dalbek Gorge is an important nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein .

The Dalbek Gorge was declared a nature reserve by the state ordinance on the Dalbek Gorge nature reserve of December 22, 1994 and is protected by this ordinance.

Geographical location

Location of the Dalbek Gorge

The Dalbek Gorge is a wooded creek gorge system cut deep into the steep slopes and is about 66 hectares in size. The nature reserve is crossed by the Dalbek brook coming from the north and belongs roughly equally to the communities of Escheburg and Börnsen . The Dalbek represents the border between the two communities.

The Dalbek Gorge is about three kilometers from the south-eastern border of Hamburg and is therefore close to the rural Vier- und Marschlande of the Hamburg district of Bergedorf .

The Dalbek Gorge is located in the hamlet of Hamburg , in the attractive landscape between the Sachsenwald in the north and the Elbe in the south. The nature reserve is part of the wooded Geest slope stretching from Hamburg-Bergedorf via Börnsen and Escheburg to Geesthacht , which in prehistory represented the northern bank of the Elbe glacial valley and is consistently around 50 to 60 meters above the flat marsh.

Geological features

The Dalbek Gorge was formed around 15,000 to 80,000 years ago. At this time, namely the Vistula Ice Age, the glaciers from the north had come to a standstill in the area of today's Holstein . The water masses from the melting glaciers dug their way to the Elbe glacial valley deep into the earth. This created this 20 to 40 meter deep old moraine erosion gorge. It is geoscientifically significant that these deep erosions made it possible to gain insights into at least 5.33 million years old deposits from the Tertiary Age , as the gorge has remained untouched for thousands of years. The forest gorge is not only appreciated by nature lovers, walkers and conservationists in every season. Especially in spring, the light-flooded forest develops large anemone carpets .

The Dalbek Gorge nature reserve is looked after by the State Office for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas and the Federation for Environmental and Nature Conservation BUND Schleswig-Holstein.
