Nick Huard (born March 29, 1991 in Sudbury , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been active for the Dresdner Eislöwen from the DEL2 since the 2017/18 season .
Career
Canadian Junior Leagues
Huard was a student in the Great North Midge League, one of Canada's many development leagues for young ice hockey players, in his home state of Ontario with the North Bay Trappers . Here he could not recommend himself for the most important junior league of Ontario, the OHL , but after he was the best point player in the Trappers in the 2007/08 season, from the Victoriaville Tigres from the QMJHL , the most important junior league of the eastern provinces of Canada , for committed to the 2008/09 season. During the season he then moved within the league to the Lewiston MAINEiacs . For the 2009/10 season he stayed on the east coast and joined the Woodstock Slammers from New Brunswick Province . The Slammers were then active in the Maritime Junior Hockey League - a league that is assigned to the second-rate Canadian junior league Canadian Junior Hockey League . Huard was in his first season the best point player of his club, with which he also won the championship of the MJHL league. He was then appointed to the Canada East national team for the World Junior A Challenge ice hockey tournament. Two more seasons and thus the rest of his junior time he stayed with the Slammers, with whom he won not only the league championship, but also the Fred Page Cup in his last season 2011/12 . This trophy is presented to the team that wins the championship of all second-rate junior ice hockey leagues in the eastern regions of Canada and thus qualifies for the tournament for the Royal Bank Cup - the championship trophy of Canada's second junior league.
Successes in the Canadian University League and the ECHL
After his junior years as a hockey player, he returned to his home state of Ontario and began studying at the University of Guelph , which he completed after 3 years as a Bachelor of Arts. During this time he was also active for the University's ice hockey team, the Guelph Gryphons , which are organized within the Canadian University League U Sports in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Conference . Huards was one of the best points on his team every season. In his last university season 2014/15 he was able to win the Queen's Cup - the championship of the OUA Conference - with the Gryphons after 18 years and qualify for the University Cup tournament. He was the player with the highest points in his club and was elected MVP of the OUA play-offs . After his good performance in the university league , he was signed by the ECHL team Cincinnati Cyclones in the 2014/15 season . He was also active for the Cyclones in the following two seasons, becoming the club's best- scoring player in the 2016/17 season.
Change to Europe in the DEL2
Through his performance in the ECHL, Huard also aroused the interest of European ice hockey leagues and so he was hired by the then DEL2 trainer Franz Steer for the Dresden Ice Lions for the 2017/18 season . The season did not go according to the ice lions' expectations, which was also justified by the performance of the foreign contingent players. With 44 points (19 goals) in 53 games, Huard was the most successful foreign player in the ranks of the Saxon club, so that after Wade McLeod's health-related withdrawal, he received a contract extension for the following season 2018/19 with the Eislöwen . Also in the main round of the 2018/19 season, Dresden had to fight for a long time to participate in the pre-play-offs. The Eislöwen then defeated the reigning DEL2 champion Bietigheim Steelers in the play-offs and reached the semi-finals. In the play-off series, in which Huard scored the first hat trick of his career, he was (as in the main round) second-best scorer behind Jordan Knackstedt as well as the most successful goalscorer of his team, so that the ice hockey club from Dresden to the contract with the Canadian extended another season .
