The script by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer is based on an article in GQ magazine entitled No Exit by Sean Flynn .

action

19 firefighters lost their lives in a forest fire in Yarnell in June 2013

The elite fire department of Prescott, Arizona, trains under Eric Marsh every day for the emergency. This occurs in June 2013 and they fight the flames together in the wilds of Yarnell, with 19 of the firefighters losing their lives. One of the firefighters is Brendan McDonough, who is the only one who survives the accident.

Historical background

The film tells a true story of the Yarnell Hill Fire in June 2013. In an attempt to protect the town of Yarnell , Arizona from a forest fire, members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots fire department were caught in the flames during a weather change. Only one man escaped, the rest died in the fire. Fourteen of the firefighters who died were between 20 and 30 years old. Despite their fatal efforts, the fire reached the town of Yarnell and about half of the town's houses burned to the ground. Two memorials were erected to commemorate the firefighters who died.

Brendan McDonough, the only survivor of the disaster, had watched the fire from a distance as a scout and narrowly escaped. After later investigations it was found that he was not to blame for the death of his comrades. Nevertheless, contempt and hatred met him for years. McDonough later wrote a book about the misfortune called My Lost Brothers (English for "My Lost Brothers").

Norbert Höfler from Stern Online remarks that what the film does not tell is what happened after the disaster, because after the disaster there was arguments for years: “It was about insurance payments and the question of why the men could not be saved. The Hotshots' widows were bullied for asking for independent investigations and not being satisfied with small severance payments. ”Roxanne Warneke, wife of fireman William, was pregnant with her first child when her husband died. Later she fell in love again, remarried and founded the aid organization Wildland Firefighter Guardian Institute (WFGI) with other widows and dependents, according to Höfler. This had set itself the goal of providing firefighters with the necessary equipment. Many fire fighting crews are still underfunded, says Höfler, and bandages, gloves, shovels, saws and simple grinding tools are often missing. The widows of the hotshots also collect money for GPS transmitters and drones, with which the fire fighting teams can better observe the fires from the air. The Arizona hotshots died because they realized far too late that the wind had turned and the fire had blocked their way. Roxanne Warneke is of the opinion: "If my husband and his comrades had been equipped with it, they would still be alive."

production

Bar and film title

Directed by Joseph Kosinski , the screenplay was written by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer . A big reason for Kosinski to make the film, according to his own statements, was the fact that firefighters work behind the scenes, but do not ask for recognition, even though what they do is so important: “We don't just talk about a film, we talk about it the legacy of these firefighters. The kids of some of these guys will watch the movie one day, so we wanted to make them as authentic as possible. "

The script by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer is based on an article in GQ magazine entitled No Exit by Sean Flynn . Therefore, the film was originally to be called No Exit , later it was to be called Granite Mountain , until it was finally named Only the Brave .

Kai Mihm of epd Film explains that the script focuses much more on the relationships within the team and on the men's private conflicts than on the fire, which is an honorable approach, especially since the film is an explicit homage to the real world Understand role models.

Cast and dubbing

Miles Teller plays the survivor Brendan McDonough

Miles Teller plays Brendan McDonough, the only firefighter to survive the Yarnell Hill forest fire. He said: “You can turn on a channel and hear about so and so's divorce, but the hotshots are important, these are Americans, and I take a lot of pride in that, and it's not political. [...] It's about the guy to the left and the right of you saying we're all in this together, which we are. " Jennifer Connelly stars as Amanda Marsh, Pell James plays Claire Caldwell, and Jenny Gabrielle stars as Desiree Steed. Lora Martinez-Cunningham plays Dr. Ochoa. Listed below are the firefighters who died in the Yarnell Hill forest fire and their age at the time of death, the actors they portray in the film, and their German voice actors . Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany, the film was approved for ages 12 and up . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is staged calmly and focuses primarily on the private and family life of the firefighters. Only towards the end does the situation become more dramatic with the fatal mission, but the death of the team is staged very cautiously. Then the grief of the families is impressively depicted. Children from the age of 12 are able to view these more emotional scenes in the context of the narrative and to process them appropriately. "

Reviews

So far, the film has won over 87 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Variety's Peter Debruge says the film is a gripping and powerfully emotional portrait of Yee Haw heroism .

Kai Mihm from epd Film says, thankfully Joseph Kosinski keeps a sober look, renounces heroic pathos and shows the "hotshots" as straightforward, unpretentious professionals. He stages the crew as a mixture of laconic John Ford cowboys and the pithy pilots in Philip Kaufman's The Right Stuff , which would have been a fitting title for his film, Mihm continues. But as fascinating as the description of the sovereign firefighting was at times, there was no real drama when the "hotshots" were deployed, as the dangers for surrounding cities and people were only conveyed in the dialogues and Kosinski had no real sense of this very special , develop a men's world shaped by traditional values and role models.

Gross profit

The worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings so far amounts to 23.5 million US dollars.
