Summary

Date: 27./28. July 1996

The favorites were the American Olympic champion from 1992 Jackie Joyner-Kersee and the Syrian world champion Ghada Shouaa. The German European Champion from 1994 Sabine Braun no longer had the excellent shape with which she had achieved many successes in recent years. Other candidates for top positions were Vice World Champion Swetlana Moskalez from Russia, the Hungarian World Cup third and Vice European Champion Rita Ináncsi, and the European Championship third Urszula Włodarczyk from Poland.

The German Mona Steigauf set the fastest time in the 100 meter hurdles with 13.22 seconds and thus took the lead. Behind her in second place was Joyner-Kersee, who was injured and, like the Italian Giuliana Spada, no longer competed in the high jump .

Steigauf lost the lead after the second discipline, the high jump. The best jumpers with 1.86 m were Włodarczyk, Shouaa and the Kazakh girl Swetlana Kazanina. Włodarczyk took the lead with 2107 points, followed by Shouaa and the German European Champion Sabine Braun. In fourth place was the Canadian Catherine Bond-Mills ahead of Steigauf.

The shot put Shouaa decided to consider for themselves. With 15.95 m she hit the ball 1.26 m further than the second best athlete Ináncsi. Shouaa now led with 72 points ahead of Włodarczyk, who in turn was 40 points ahead of Braun. Belarusian Natallja Sasanowitsch followed in fourth place ahead of Ináncsi.

In the last discipline of the first day, the 200-meter run , Sasanowitsch ran the fastest time with 23.72 seconds. This pushed her past Braun into third place. Shouaa remained in the lead with 3992 points. Their lead over Włodarczyk had increased to 112 points.

The long jump brought a change at the top of the ranking. Sasanowitsch, who was the best long jumper with 6.70 m, passed Shouaa and Włodarczyk. With her distance she would have qualified for the long jump final. The Belarusian led by six points, Shouaa's advantage over Włodarczyk was 99 points. In fourth place, another 94 points back, followed the Cuban Regla María Cárdenas.

In the javelin throw Shouaa achieved a best distance of 55.70 m in an Olympic heptathlon. With that she took the lead again and was now 182 points ahead of Sasanowitsch. British Denise Lewis, who was 81 points behind Sasanowitsch, worked her way up to third place. Then Włodarczyk followed before Braun.

The last discipline was the 800-meter run . In order to become Olympic champion, Shouaa could run a maximum of 14 seconds slower than Sasanowitsch, who for her part was not allowed to cross the finish line more than five seconds behind Lewis. US athlete Sharon Hanson ran the fastest time with 2: 11.67 minutes. Ghada Shouaa was able to extend her lead even further and in the end was 223 points ahead of Natallja Sasanowitsch. Denise Lewis narrowly maintained her third place. Urszula Włodarczyk came within five points. Behind the Pole, Eunice Barber, here for Sierra Leone and later for France, worked her way up to fifth. Rita Ináncsi followed in sixth ahead of Sabine Braun.

Ghada Shouaa was not only the first Syrian woman to win a medal and the first to ever win an Olympic victory for Syria. At the same time, she also won her country's first medal in athletics.
