Course of competition

Olympic champion:
Jelena Laschmanowa. Russia

August 11, 2012, 5 p.m.

Due to her disqualification due to doping, the Russian Olympic champion of 2008 Olga Kaniskina will not play a role in the following description of the course of the competition.

The Chinese Liu Hong set a fast pace from the start. So the field of walkers quickly tore open and numerous smaller and larger groups formed. Up to eight kilometers, Liu steadily increased her lead to 38 seconds. Behind her came a field of pursuers with the Russians Jelena Laschmanowa and Anissja Kirdjapkina and the Chinese Qoijing Gyi and Lü Xiuzhi. Until halfway through the track, the distance between Liu and this group of four remained constant for the time being.

While Lü lost contact with the group, Laschmanowa, Kirdjapkina and Qoijing caught up with Liu in the lead over the next five kilometers. The pace remained high, the 2-kilometer sections were walked between 8:25 min and 8:44 min. At sixteen kilometer Kirdjapkina and Liu dropped out of the leading group. Only Laschmanowa and Qoijing were now ahead, and they were now stepping up the pace. Behind them, Kirdjapkina lost touch with Liu. It was only on the last kilometer that Laschmanowa was able to break away decisively from her last competitor and reached the goal as the winner in a new world record time . Fourteen seconds behind, Qoijing finished second. Liu was third, Kirdjapkina fourth and Lü fifth.
