The road race of women in the 2012 Olympics in London took place on 29 July 2012 at 12.00 local time instead.
Since Mark Cavendish , the British hope for a medal, missed the podium at the lecture, the host nation's hopes rested on Lizzie Armitstead . The race started in heavy rain. The start and finish of the race was The Mall and led over Box Hill . Due to the heavy rains, there were many flat tires and incidents.
The first attempt to break away in the race was made by the Brazilian Janildes Silva Fernandes , but this was unsuccessful. After 35 kilometers, the Dutchwoman Ellen van Dijk managed to break away from the main field with a few other riders. However, these were caught up again. A few minutes later, van Dijk took the initiative again and pulled away, but during this attempt it was again cut down. On the ascent to Box Hill , American Kristin Armstrong pulled away, followed by British Emma Pooley . But this duo was also caught up again. 50 kilometers from the finish, the leading group consisted of around 35 riders, including the Dutchwoman Marianne Vos , who pulled away on the last lap after descending from Box Hill. She was followed by Olga Sabelinskaja , Lizzie Armitstead , Shelley Olds and Alena Amjaljussik , who quickly gained a half-minute lead. After Olds had a flat tire, 10 kilometers from the finish, the three other drivers increased their lead over their pursuers to 48 seconds. After two kilometers the Russian Sabelinskaja tried in vain to break away from the other two athletes, Vos sprinted about 200 meters from the finish and was able to secure the Olympic victory with a bike length ahead of Armitstead.
Results
If a rider crossed the finish line in the same group as the rider in front of him, he was credited with the same time.
According to the UCI regulations for road races, Article 2.3.039 applies: "Any rider who crosses the finish line with a time that is more than 5% of the winning time will not be included in the ranking of the race." Measured against the winning time of the Dutchwoman Marianne Vos , the time limit for the race was 3:45:15 h.
