Omar Julian Leal Covelli (born May 11, 1990 in Bucaramanga ) is a Colombian racing car driver . Leal used the name Omar Leal early in his career . Since 2010 he starts under the name Julian Leal . He contested a few races with an Italian racing license. He competed in the GP2 series from 2011 to 2015 .

Career

Leal began his motorsport career in 2006 in the Pan-American Formula Renault and finished ninth overall. In 2007 he started in two other races in this championship, but his main focus was on the Euroseries 3000 , in which he competed for Durango . At the end of the season he finished tenth overall. In 2008 Leal stayed with Durango in the Euroseries 3000. With four podium finishes, Leal improved to sixth place in the drivers' standings this season and also won the Italian Formula 3000 championship, which included eight Euroseries 3000 races.

In 2009 Leal switched to Formula Renault 3.5 for the Prema Powerteam . He only managed to score points in one race as third. In the overall ranking he finished 20th. In 2010 Leal competed in the Formula Renault 3.5 for the International DracoRacing championship team. He used the name Julian Leal from this season . In contrast to his teammate Nathanaël Berthon , who finished the season in seventh place, Leal won no race and finished 20th overall. Parallel to his involvement in Formula Renault 3.5, Leal competed in the Auto GP , the former Euroseries 3000, for Trident Racing in the 2010 season . With a win he finished ninth in the drivers' championship at the end of the season.

In 2011, Leal initially planned to switch to the GP3 series . However, he received an offer from the Rapax team for the 2011 season of the GP2 Asia series , which he accepted. At the end of the season he finished 26th overall. In March Leal was eventually also for the 2011 season of the GP2 Series obliged by Rapax. While his team-mate Fabio Leimer decided a race for himself, Leal remained without points and finished 27th overall. After the season he started for Trident Racing at the 2011 GP2 Final and finished 22nd. In 2012 , Leal stayed with Trident and completed his second season in the GP2 series. He finished 21st in the drivers' standings and was therefore defeated by his team-mate Stéphane Richelmi , who was 18th.

In 2013 , Leal switched to Racing Engineering within the GP2 series . In Spa-Francorchamps , Leal finished second in the sprint race for the first time in his GP2 career on the podium. At the following sprint race in Monza , a third place was followed by another podium finish. While his team mate Fabio Leimer won the championship with 201 points, Leal finished the overall standings in twelfth place with 62 points. For his fourth GP2 season, Leal changed racing team again. It started for Carlin in 2014 . Leal started the season with a second and third place at the season opener in as-Sachir . He did not get any further podium placements and was tenth in the overall classification. With 68 to 224 points he was defeated by his team-mate Felipe Nasr . In 2015 , Leal stayed with Carlin in the GP2 series. He left the championship prematurely after the eighth event and was 14th in the drivers' standings.

Leal is a Colombian citizen. In the first half of 2011 he competed with an Italian license. Otherwise he started under the Colombian flag.
