Otto Graf von Schwerin (born April 21, 1645 in Berlin , † May 8, 1705 in Altlandsberg ) was a Brandenburg - Prussian Privy Councilor and diplomat .

Life

Otto von Schwerin (the younger) came from the Pomeranian aristocratic Schwerin family and was the son of the Chief President and Privy Councilor Otto von Schwerin (1616–1679).

After educational trips through Holland and France , he became captain of the Land of Ruppin in 1667 , and in 1668 court and chamber judge. The Great Elector sent him on a diplomatic mission to Dresden , Hanover , Heidelberg , Leipzig and Quedlinburg . Appointed to the Privy Council in 1673, he was sent to London several times to convince Charles II to join the League against France. After the death of his father, he became treasurer of the Kurmark , and he also inherited his father's lands. 1683 and 1686, he was appointed as ambassador to the Emperor Leopold I sent. In 1689 he was elected Provost of the Brandenburg Cathedral Chapter at the suggestion of the Elector ; he held the prebend until his death in 1705.

At the coronation of the new Elector Friedrich III. he carried the scepter as treasurer . Even if Otto von Schwerin never held positions as high as his father, in 1693 he became governor of Crossen , Züllichau and Schwiebus and commander of the Order of St. John . Between 1696 and 1698 he headed the Privy Council several times when the Elector was absent. He was involved in the overthrow of First Minister Eberhard von Danckelman and a member of the commission that led the proceedings against him. On September 11, 1700 he was raised to the rank of imperial count by the emperor and from July 12, 1701 he was knight of the Black Eagle Order .

Otto von Schwerin was married to Ermgard Marie von Quadt zu Wickradt (* April 28, 1651 - November 12, 1730) since 1668 and had the following children:
